GREENE – In a last second decision to schedule a game, Oxford varsity softball traveled down route 12 to take on Greene, yesterday May 5. Greene would hold on late to earn the win at 14-12, after Oxford would try to rally in the seventh inning.
Greene would jump out to a solid lead at 2-0 in the first inning, only to see the Lady Blackhawks claim the lead for their own in the third when they scored 3-runs, drawing the game to 3-2.
“Allison Beckwith pitched well, and kept us guessing through most of the game until our bats came alive, and when they did we had some hard hits,” said Greene head coach Rick Condon.
Oxford elected to allow Allison Beckwith to pitch through the duration of the seven inning game as she found her groove early on. Beckwith finished with 110-pitches, throwing out six strikeouts and only three walks on the night.
Pitching for Greene was Alex Thompson for the first roughly 3 ½ innings before Lydia Howard came in to back up Thompson and finish the game out. Thompson threw out two strikeouts with five walks, while Howard also secured only two strikeouts with seven additional walks.
However, despite Oxford's Beckwith pitching a solid game, the bats did eventually come alive for the Lady Trojans who knocked 17-hits at the plate compared to Oxford's 7-hits.
“It was really good, both teams played very well. A lot of great hitting and fielding. We were pretty well rounded tonight,” said Oxford head coach Heather Pizza. “We got our bat on the ball in the early innings, we just couldn’t string anything together. Later in the game we did a better job at that.”
This marked the second matchup of the season between the two high school teams, with Greene securing the first win at 19-12, Oxford showed some improvement on the season only losing 14-12 the second time around.
It was the fourth inning, and down 3-2, that Greene did see their bats come alive, as they scored at least two runs in each of the remaining innings; with two in the fourth, four in the fifth, four in the sixth, and two in the seventh.
Oxford did attempt to keep pace with hard hitting Trojans, but fell just short of holding onto the win as they were blanked in the sixth and unable to make up the lost potential runs in the seventh, only scoring four in the seventh.
Greene batting: Alyssa Sands 2-4 with a run, McKenna Sergi 2-5 with three runs and an RBI, Sydney Bennett 3-4 with three runs and two RBI's, Maddie Brink 2-4 with two runs and two RBI's, Brittany Johns 3-4 with three runs and four RBI's, Lydia Howard 2-4 with two RBI's, Abbey Sands 1-3 with an RBI, Jenna Harrington 1-3 with an RBI, and Kathleen Hanrahan 1-2 with a run.
Oxford batting: Kylie Roys 1-4 with a run, Lauren Cobb 1-2 with three runs, Allison Beckwith 2-4 with three runs and four RBI's, Raigen Ehly 0-2 with two runs and an RBI, Emilee Eldred 0-2 with a run and an RBI, Rachel Seiler 1-4 with four RBI's, Jessie Howe 0-5 with an RBI, Layla Kriz 2-4 with a run, and Destiny Oralls 0-2 with a run.
“Brittany Johns had a great game going 3-4 at the plate and came close to a dinger, which is the new term for home run apparently. All the players had a good night at the plate,” said Condon.
“I was very proud of them, Mr Condon always runs a solid program and we want to make sure we can compete with that. Sometimes we have off days, but our program is growing,” said Pizza. “I was pretty impressed with them, and I was really happy Greene called us and asked us to play a game today.”
Up next for Greene is Sidney at home later on today at 4:30 p.m., weather permitting. This also will be their senior night celebration. Oxford will play next in the MAC-mini tournament this coming Monday, May 9.
