Norwich downs Oneonta, moves to secure division title and prepares for REK

NORWICH – Norwich boys Track and Field earned a double win over the visiting Oneonta Yellowjackets this past Tuesday, May 3,
The boys would throttle a depleted Oneonta roster when they earned the win at 110-30; while the girls would also secure the win by a much closer margin at 73-68.
“We have some veterans on the team who are stepping up and always have. They are really showing a great example for younger girls that are coming up,” said Norwich Track Coach Shaun Horan.
The girls side would earn the win as a team over the Yellowjackets in a showing of depth, earning many second and third place finishes to secure the extra points to ultimately gain the 5-point win.
It was Nicole Jeffrey, Emily Shattuck, Savannah Williams, Hailey Collabeli, Katelyn Shaver and Kara Evans who would step up to earn some first place finishes in the meet, having only nine events end in Norwich's favor.
Shattuck would avenge her close loss in the 100 meter dash by defeating the same girl in the 200 meter dash by a mere .1 of a second to run a :28.
Shattuck also tied her seasons best in the long jump when she managed a 16'7” jump.
Nicole Jeffrey stepped up in a huge way for the Tornado to earn wins in the 1500 meter run, 800 meter run, and 3000 meter run. Posting times of 5:38.1, 2:36, and 12:29.3 respectively.
Hailey Collabeli managed a solid run in the 400 meter dash for the win when she ran a solid time of 1:09.3.
Williams impressed at the high jump pit when she cleared a 4'8” for the win.
While Norwich's throwers who always perform well, stayed consistent and earned wins with Shaver taking the Shot Put with a throw of 31'6”, and Kara Evans claiming the Discus with a throw of 98'8”.
“It is incredible to see what they are doing. We knew it would be a tough season for the girls coming in, but right now we are still undefeated in our division. At this point, Oneonta beat Chenango Forks so the worst we can do is tie for the division title. Oneonta beat them by 5-points, we just beat Oneonta by 5-points. So next week against Forks is for the division title,” said Horan.
Horan also noted that the simple outright wins by the girls on the track was impressive but what truly helped win the meet in the end was the sheer amount of second and third places that Norwich was able to secure on the girls side.
In the 100 hurdles, Hannah Klockowski would earn a second place finish for the Tornado with a run of 17.9. Klockowski also secured a third in the triple jump when she managed a jump all the way into third place at 29'10 1/2”.
Emily Shattuck and Michaela Fazio notched a second and third place finish with runs of 13.3 and 14.0 respectively to help earn some points in the 100 meter dash despite not actually winning the event.
“She (Michaela Fazio) was a saving grace here today, she saw me during the and told me the Doctor didn’t take her out. So I told her we'd love to have her for the REK this Friday, and she said she had her shorts and her spikes with her. It was perfect, I said get on the bus I will put you in things,” said Horan.
Fazio also managed a second place finish behind Shattuck in the long jump when she landed a length of 14'4 1/2”.
Delilah Geislinger came up big for the Tornado with her two second place finishes in the 400 meter dash and the 200 meter dash; running times of 1:12.1, and 30.5 respectively.
The 400 meter hurdles saw Norwich go second and third with Destiny Gladney at second with a run of 1:22.3 and Hannah Klockowski at 124.4.
Gladney also managed a second place finish in the high jump, behind teammate Savannah Williams when she cleared the height of 4'2”.
Liz Eddy managed to clear the height of 6'6” in the Pole Vault to help Norwich out with an additional second place finish.
The Norwich throwers, Evans and Shaver actually flip-flopped events for second place. With Shaver taking second in the Discus with a throw of 92'2”, and Evans taking second in the Shot Put with a throw of 26'11”.
The boys side was slanted quite differently, as the Norwich boys managed to win each and every event they participated in, followed up by many placings behind that.
The Norwich boys swept all the relays; with Ben Ericksen, Gabe Gawronski, Noah Bufalini, and Chris Brown managed a win with a time of 9:18 in the 4x800 relay; the 4x400 relay of Buffalini, Gawronski, Scott Tomanocy, and Connor Supensky ran a 4:00; while the 4x100 relay ran unattested resulting in a slower than usual time, Zach Race, David Berger, Connor Nial, and Eric Conant would run a :47 for the win in that event as well.
Nial claimed additional wins in the 110 hurdles 400 meter hurdles with times of 19.4 and 1:09.5. Jacob Russell claimed a second and third place finish in each of the hurdles, taking second in the 110 with a time of 20.3 and a third in the 400 with a time of 1:17.2.
Gabe Gawronski impressed on the day with a winning run of 54.6 in the 400 meter dash followed by a third place finish by Supensky at a time of 57.9.
“He had a really great run, Gabe beat him (Oneonta) by like a tenth it was great and a personal record for him,” said Horan.
Ben Ericksen claimed a win in the 1600 meter with a time of 4:44.4, and in 3200 with a time of 10:54.5.
Buffalini and Ethan Lestico went 1-2 in the 800 meter run with times of 2:13.1, and 2:18.3, respectively.
Zach Race and Eric Conant impressed in the sprinting events as Race hit a solid time in the 200 for the win followed by Eric Conant who edged his guy at the finish line for the second place finish. Race ran a 23.8, while Conant ran a 25.1.
“He finally got the lean, Eric was getting beat by like 2 feet, which was surprising because he dusted this kid in the 100, but he finally had the perfect lean to beat the kid by fractions of a second, it was perfect,” said Horan.
Norwich elected to bring down thrower David Bernstein from the throwing pits to make a run in the jumping. Bernstein claimed a first place in the long jump followed by Conant. Bernstein also steamrolled his competition at the high jump pit winning that as well.
In long jump for the win Bernstein jumped 18'1 1/2” followed by Conant in second with 17'7”. At the high jump he cleared the height of 5'6”.
Jordan Vinal continued to lay his claim to the triple jump pit with a winning jump of 38'2 3/4” followed by teammate Chris Brown in third place with a jump of 34' 9 1/2”.
David Bernstein would also return to throwing to claim a first in the Discus with a throw of 134'9”, an event where Norwich would sweep Oneonta going one, two, and three.
Thomas Reilly secured a win at the Shot Put to close out the meet with a throw of 46' 4 11/2” followed by Bernstein in second with a 40' 5” throw.
Trevor McCarthy snuck in to complete the sweep for Norwich at the Discus when he launched his best on the evening to a 118'.
Next up for Norwich, they will be hosting a slew of Chenango County teams later on today at the Annual REK Track Invitational meet in remembrance of the three girls Track and Field athletes who lost their lives in a drunk driving accident some years ago.
The meet is slanted to start 4 p.m., weather permitting, with the REK remembrance walk followed by events. This Invitational also marks the Norwich boys and girls Track and Field senior night.
