OXFORD – The Oxford varsity baseball team came into the week with a winning 6-4 record, only to see errors and tough match ups drop them to .500 record of 6-6 record at weeks end.
Oxford took on Hancock high school this past Monday, May 2., and played to 7-7 tie before the game was postponed and finished up Thursday evening.
Looking back the tie might have been sweeter, as coming into the game at 7-7, Oxford surrendered 7-runs to Hancock while failing to add anymore to their score, losing 14-7.
“We struggled to get started, settled down, then we couldn’t hit,” said Oxford head coach Chris Palmer.
Much as Palmer attested, Oxford was only able to muster two hits on the night, both going to Phil Smith, who finished 2-3 with a run and an RBI.
The rough day continued for Oxford who with a combined three pitchers of Kevin Davis, Austin Crawford, and Phil Smith only managed five strikeouts, compared to nine thrown out by the Hancock trio of pitchers.
It was errors that ultimately spelled doom for Oxford as they committed 8-errors, something that Hancock took full advantage of.

On Wednesday, May 4, Oxford took on Sidney in a game they were trying to upset the warriors in, but ultimately lost 10-1 in.
Sidney jumped out early with the 3-0 lead in the first inning and would not let up the entire game, although Oxford did battle to hold the game close for most of the game.
Once again for Oxford the batting just seemed to be lacking, as they only managed two hits in this contest as well; with Kevin Davis earning one and finishing 1-4 with a run and Corey Marshman finishing 1-2 with the lone RBI.
The pitching in this contest for Oxford was improved, as the duo of Dylan Depew and Jon Heggie threw out seven strikeouts to go with only four walks.
However, despite improvement, it Sidney's Zak Green who dominated on the mound throwing out 11-strikeouts in six innings.
“We did not play well in two phases of the game. Our pitching was good enough, but offensively and in the field we did not do well. Green pitched very well,” said Palmer.
Up next for Oxford will be the MAC-mini tournament home this coming Monday, May 9 at 4:30 p.m.
