Norwich drops two in double header despite showing signs of improvement
NORWICH – Following the loss to Owego and a rainout of Fridays game against Johnson City, Norwich hosted a double header at home, facing The Oneonta Yellowjackets and The Windsor Black Knights.
Norwich would play two solid games of baseball, however would drop both games, losing to Oneonta 5-1, and Windsor 9-3.
Oneonta came to town first for the Tornado, and struggled to earn the runs early, only leading Norwich 1-0 heading into the fourth inning of play.
“We made some bad base-running mistakes, and we got caught steeling,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull. “We had two guys on in the first inning and got doubled up, so that really killed our momentum.”
It was the fourth inning that Oneonta managed to tack on two additional runs, pulling the lead away from Norwich even greater.
Norwich would only manage four hits on the night in part to the solid pitching from Oneonta pitcher, Mikolaicyk, who pitched the entire game throwing out three strikeouts.
It was Norwich's Gabe Gojani who pitched the majority of the game, helping keep the game as close as possible.
“Gabe pitched well, especially on short rest,” said Turnbull.
Gojani threw out two strikeouts in the five and a third innings he pitched before he was relived by Nick Murphy for an inning and Dylan Mack for the final inning.
Norwich lone score came in the final inning, but it was too little too late for the Tornado.
It was Chris Jeffrey in the seventh inning who managed to connect with the ball to send Nick Murphy home for the score, drawing the game to 5-1.
“When we did get guys on we just couldn’t get anything going. We didn’t have a baserunner get to third base until the last inning, so they really shut us down,” said Turnbull.
Norwich would see Jeffrey go 0-3 with an RBI, Austin McCloskey go 2-3, Gabe Gojani go 1-3, Nick Murphy go 0-2 with a run scored, and Garrett Thornton go 1-2.
“We didn’t leave many guys on, but we really just didn’t have the big inning we needed,” said Turnbull.
Despite the loss, Norwich showed improvement from the last outing against the Yellowjackets, when they lost 11-1.

Following the completion of the first game, Norwich had some downtime to recover before Windsor game to town.
Norwich, who previously lost to Windsor 21-6, managed a much closer game this time around, only losing 9-3.
While only down 3-1 heading into the fifth inning Norwich came to life briefly when they sent home two runners to tie the score at 3-3.
“I think personally Windsor is the best team we play, they've lost twice only. I think we played well and we just had a bad inning, said Turnbull. “We tied them up at 3-3, then they just hit the ball and they had that home run. That is the first home run I have seen in a game since we had the fence and that kid is a sophomore.”
Norwich would tie the game briefly, before The Black Knights would explode on the scene with a six-run inning to take the lead at 9-3.
“With a team like Windsor the only way to beat them is if you out slug them, and we just couldn’t out slug them,” said Turnbull. “Their coach encourages them to swing as hard as they can at every pitch, they swing for home runs.”
Trying to keep pace with the Black Knights, Norwich saw their batters improve greatly from their previous game connecting nine times with the ball, compared to Windsor's 12 in the game.
Batting: Gabe Gojani 1-4 with a run, John Predmore 2-3 with a run, Nick Murphy 3-4 with a run and an RBI, Paden Burlison 1-3, Chris Jeffrey 2-4 with an RBI, and Austin McCloskey 0-4 with an RBI.
Pitching on the mound for Norwich was Nick Murphy for the first four and a third innings. Murphy threw out 99-pitches recording five strikeouts.
John Predmore and Dylan Mack each came in for relief for an inning, each getting a strikeout of their own.
Windsor saw their starting pitcher, Jake Woodrow, pitch five innings and strikeout nine Norwich batters.
“I forgot to put my hat on and take my helmet off in the sixth inning, so that is on me,” said Turnbull of the routine he does each change of inning and the six run inning Windsor had. “Obviously we play to win, but we had a lot of improvement today.”
With these two additional losses this past Saturday, Norwich now sits at a 1-13-1 overall record as they will look to head to Chenango Valley later on today, May 9, at 4:30 p.m.
Senior night for the Tornado baseball team the following day, Tuesday, May 10. at home against Chenango Forks at 4:30 p.m.
