The Place breaks ground on new playground
NORWICH – It’s out with the old and in with the new at the Christian Neighborhood Center of Norwich.
Thanks to the generosity of its volunteers and the monetary support of local foundations, the Christian Neighborhood Center, more commonly called “The Place,” is updating its playground for the scores of kids who participate in the organization’s after school and summer programming.
Last week, The Place broke ground on the new playground which administrators were able to purchase using grant funding from the Roger Follett Foundation, the R.C. Smith Foundation, and the Greater Norwich Foundation.
The $30,000 project is expected to be completed later this week.
Said The Place Director Rebecca Bliss, “We are so grateful to the foundations that have supported this project as well as Thompson Brothers, Inc., who is volunteering their time to excavate the play area; and Chad Harris at the Post Office who has worked with us to make sure we have parking space and room to move vehicles carrying heavy equipment in and out of the parking lot.”
“We’re proud to support an organization that does such great things for the youth of our community,” said Dick Thompson of Thompson Brothers, Inc.
The Place has contracted with Parkitects Inc. to replace the equipment. When finished, the new playground will include a customized play structure with a double slide, net climber and climbing pole, a double bobble rider (a compact see-saw on a spring moved by children rocking back and forth), and a stand-up spinner.
“Each new structure will not only be fun for the children, but will provide them the opportunity to work on balance, coordination, motor planning, core body strength, agility, upper body strength, lower body strength, endurance, cardiovascular, and flexibility,” said Bliss.
The Place is planning an open house event to be held later this month that will allow the community to see the new playground, but kids are already excited about it.
“This is epic,” said 12-year-old Zoie who attends The Place KIDS program. She added that with the new playground, “everything will be better.”
The Place is a community environment where children, young adults, and families are nurtured, affirmed and celebrated. The organization carries a mission to love all youth as they are and help them reach their full potential as they become responsible, contributing members of society.
