Eddy and Sanford help carry Tornado softball to 10th win

CHENANGO VALLEY– The Norwich varsity softball team earned their tenth win of the 2016 season, when they traveled to Chenango Valley Monday, May 9., winning 5-3
“It was good game, we got the win. But the storyline is Hannah and Jordan,” said Norwich head coach Scott Moore.
After starting somewhat slow on both sides, Norwich managed to score a run in the second inning when Airelle Jacquette managed to connect with the ball, ultimately grounding out to second base but sending Norwich's Hannah Eddy home for the score.
At 1-0 heading into the third, it was senior Shannon Moore who hit a solid shot to left field, ultimately being recorded as an error due to a dropped catch. This hit saw Moore reach first base and allowed her teammate, Bridget Murphy to fly home from third. Murphy had previously started the inning out with a third base hit to right field.
At 2-0, Norwich slugger Jordan Sanford stepped to the plate to knock Moore and herself home with a two run homer giving Norwich the edge they ultimately needed to pull out the win.
“She had a two run home run in the third, right off the scoreboard, hit the middle of the score board, it was nice,” said coach Moore.
Despite the batting from Norwich in the early innings, it was their pitcher and defense who truly kept them in the position to win throughout the game.
Norwich's pitcher, Hannah Eddy, nearly managed a no-hitter in the game, as she had the no hitter in the books through five and a third innings of play.
Eddy tossed out an astounding 104 pitches in seven innings, striking out 12-CV batters, while only surrendering one walk late in the game.
“She (Eddy) owned them, she had a no hitter going for five and third. She struck the first girl out in the sixth inning, then the next two girls reached on ground ball errors,” said coach Moore. “She could have went a full game with a no-hitter, she was pitching good if not for the errors fielding.”
Tornado batters: Shannon Moore 0-3 with a run and an RBI, Jordan Sanford 1-3 with a run and two RBI's, Hannah Eddy 0-3 with a run, Airelle Jacquette 1-3 with an RBI, Alex Colley 1-2 with a run, Bridget Murphy 1-2 with a run, Allison Yacano 1-1 with an RBI.
Yacono would secure the final RBI late in the seventh inning, sending Colley home for the run.
Norwich, now sitting at a 10-6 overall record will host the Chenango Forks Blue Devils, Tuesday, May 10 at 4:30 p.m.
Norwich will be celebrating their senior night the following day against Johnson City at home with the senior celebration slated to take place at 4 p.m.
