OXFORD – The Oxford varsity baseball team secured their seventh win of the season when Walton came to town Monday, May 9, Oxford would ultimately outhit Walton to win 14-3.
“We hit the ball tonight and we hit the ball really well. We came into the game with a team batting average of like .208, we had been facing some really good teams lately,” said Oxford head coach Chris Palmer. “Gave up the unearned run in the first, then answered back with 8-runs. That really got the ball rolling for us and gave us some energy.”
Much as Palmer attested, Oxford would jump out to a solid 8-1 lead in the first inning of play. The pitching from Oxford pitcher Kevin Davis ensured that this early lead would not go to waste when he secured a very solid day on the mound.
Davis pitched the first six innings of the contest, only giving up the early unearned run to Walton while tossing out 94-pitches and striking out nine Walton batters.
“Kevin pitched really well for us tonight,” said Palmer.
It wasn’t until the seventh inning that Walton managed to round the bases for two additional scores, and by that time Oxford saw their bats tack on three runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth, and one additional run in the sixth to close the game out.
“We hit well the rest of the way, hitting was kind of contagious the rest of the game,” said Palmer.
Oxford saw seven different kids record more than one hit, with seven doubles, 11-extra base hits.
“That is as good as we have hit it all year,” said Palmer. “It would be nice to get hot this time of the year.”
Oxford will host Unatego, May 10, at 4:30 p.m. in the second round of the MAC mini tournament.
“They (Unatego) have a good pitcher, they’re a good team. But if we hit the ball like we did today then we'll play with them,” said Palmer.
