NORWICH – The Norwich varsity baseball team was hoping to earn that second win of the season on their senior night, however, The Blue Devils had other plans when they limited the hits for the Tornado, winning 6-1, on May 10.
Norwich celebrated their four graduating seniors, Seniors; Jake Walsh, Johnathan Predmore, Nick Murphy and Gabe Gojani, prior to the start of the game.
“They played a lot better than yesterday, I was completely happy with our effort. What it came down to is we just didn’t hit the ball very well,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull.
Norwich played nearly error free baseball, which was much improved from the previous nights loss to Chenango Valley. With the one minor error coming in the first inning, Norwich elected to commit no further errors past that point.
“Our one error came in the first inning and they scored a run on it, but it was nice to play pretty much error free baseball after that one inning,” explained Turnbull. “Fourth inning had 6 guys comes to the plate, but every other inning they only had three or four guys come up to the plate, so we limited base runners for them.”
Chenango Forks would jump out to an early lead over Norwich at 3-1 in the first inning, before their bats cooled for while. The Blue Devils would tack on their three additional runs in the fourth inning, while blanking the Norwich batters in runs past the opening inning.
“We made a couple running mistakes in the early part of the game, we just couldn’t get any momentum,” said Turnbull.
The shining moment for The Tornado on senior night, Norwich's senior Nick Murphy knocked an RBI double in the first inning to send fellow senior Jake Walsh home for the run.
Despite the lack of hitting on the Norwich side, Chenango Forks struggle somewhat to hit as well, only earning four hits to Norwich's two on the evening.
“It was a well pitched game by both sides,” said Turnbull.
On the mound for all seven innings for The Tornado was Nick Murphy who threw two strikeouts on the day with only two walks surrendered. While Chenango Forks saw their pitcher Dan Crowningshield pitch all seven innings with five strikeouts and only three walks.
Senior John Predmore caught for for the first time on the season for the Tornado, “He only had one passed ball, he looked good back there,” said Turnbull. “I was happy we played pretty solid baseball. It has been one or the other with hitting and playing good defense, maybe tomorrow it will all come tomorrow.”
Norwich (1-14-1) will conclude their 2016 season at home, May 11. when they take on Johnson City at 4:30 p.m.
