NORWICH – After enjoying their landmark tenth win of the season the previous day, the Norwich varsity softball team suffered a late game loss to the visiting Chenango Forks Blue Devils, at 4-3 on May 10.
“We had them, it was a really good game,” said Norwich head coach Scott Moore. “We had bases loaded there in the sixth and Hannah (Eddy) got a two run double to put us up.”
After giving up two early runs to the Blue Devils, with one coming in the first and one coming in the fifth, Norwich saw their bats awaken for an inning to take the late lead at 3-2, when they managed a three run inning in the sixth.
Eddy's two run double in the bottom of the sixth sent Bridget Murphy and Shannon Moore home for the runs, while advancing Kassidy Seary to third base, and eventually home as well.
Up 3-2 heading into the final inning of play, Forks squeezed in their final run of the game in the top of the seventh, something Norwich failed to match with their at bat.
“They started off the seventh with a couple singles, and three passed balls later and they were up 4-3,” explained coach Moore. “Katie Zimmerman lead off single Alexis Burge tried bunting, then Shannon and Hannah had some miscommunication so now they had someone of first and second. Then another passed ball and Zimmerman scored, then another past ball and Alexis scored, pretty much how it happened with those passed balls.”
Hannah Eddy pitched for the Tornado for all seven innings tossing out seven strikeouts to just one walk, while Chenango Forks pitcher Kylee Warner pitched seven innings with nine strikeouts and three walks.
Norwich batters: Shannon Moore 1-3 with a run, Kassidy Seary 1-2 with a run, Hannah Eddy 1-3 with three RBI's, Airelle Jacquette 1-3, and Bridget Murphy 0-2 with a run.
“Shannon, Kassidy, and Hannah all had doubles in the game, so were making contact finally again,” said coach Moore.
Norwich (10-7) will conclude their regular season schedule at home celebrating their seniors when The Johnson City Wildcats come to town, May 11., at 4 p.m.
Norwich previously beat Johnson City earlier in the season, winning 12-7, an outcome they hope to repeat to reach their eleventh win on senior night.
“They (JC) were kind of shocking because they’re usually not that lively with the bats. They have a new coach, they play small ball, and they’re hitting well. They’re a well rounded team this year,” said coach Moore.
