Trojans split, earn ninth win after falling to Unatego

GREENE – Greene varsity baseball held two home games this week, going 1-1 in close contests, losing to Unatego 4-2 in extra innings on Monday, before rebounding with a 5-1 win over Walton on May 10.

Unatego

The Trojans would play some solid baseball on May 9, in the first round of the consolation MAC mini tournament, when visiting Unatego came to town, taking the game to 11-innings before ultimately succumbing to a Unatego win.
Greene jumped out to an early 2-0 lead heading into the fourth inning, with a run in the first and third innings.
However, Unatego managed to string together enough in the fifth inning to draw the game 2-1 in the top of the fourth. Greene was poised to end the game and walk away the victors of the game before surrendering a late push from Unatego in the seventh inning.
Unatego's Jeremy Wise would reach first base on a fielders choice throw to home to save the run. This advanced Jake Dejoy to third base, and eventually reaching home due to error.
Tied up at 2-2 and heading into extra inning, neither Greene nor Unatego would manage to get a guy home until the top of the tenth inning when Unatego would manage two guys on base due to an error and an intentional walk. Josh Feyerabend of Unatego would hit the RBI for the eventual winning run sending his teammate, Parker Packard home late in the tenth.
Unatego would tack on an additional run in the eleventh inning, as Greene would see only one guy reach a base due to a walk the remainder of the game.
Pitching and committed errors was key in the matchup, as The Trojans only connected with the ball four times in the contest, while committing six errors. Unatego saw no errors in their game on Monday, connecting with Greene's pitchers, Jordon Harrington (eight innings) and Ben Kinney (three innings) eight times.
Harrington and Kinney combined for a total seven strikeouts, while Unatego's trio at the mound combined for a massive total of 16 strikeouts.
Greene batters: Luke Day 1-5 with an RBI, Dalton Brower 2-5 with an RBI, and Zach Orzell 1-4.

Walton

After a hard-fought 11-inning battle the day prior, Greene baseball returned to the diamond for another matchup on May 10, this time rebounding and earning the win at 5-1.
It was a slow day at the plate for both teams to begin the game as neither would score, until Greene saw a three run inning in the fourth go their way.
On the mound for Greene was Zach Orzell for the first six innings, before Lucian Austin came in for the last inning of relief. Orzell saw most of the action with 83 pitches thrown to 51 strikes, earning three strikeouts on the day.
Greene did manage one more hit in this contest compared to the previous nights game, as five hits went in Greene's favor.
In a game with only one error a piece for the teams, Greene would simply manage the runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth, as Walton struggled with piecing together a solid inning, only scoring their lone run in the sixth inning.
Greene batters: Luke Day 1-2, Dalton Brower 1-2 with two runs, Ben Kinney 01 with a run, Zach Orzell 0-3 with two runs, Jacob Cook 2-3 with two RBI's, and Breven Gilmore 1-3.
Greene (9-7) will travel to Whitney Point on May 12, to play their final regular season matchup at 4:30 p.m.
