NORWICH – The Norwich varsity baseball squad concluded their 2016 campaign with a loss to visiting Johnson City at 9-2, on May 11.
“I have coached a long time in Norwich and we have had good teams and bad teams. I don’t know if I have enjoyed a better group of kids,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull.
Norwich would earn the go-ahead run in the second inning at 2-1, after giving up an early run to JC in the first inning.
However, with runners on base, Norwich would suffer through some costly outs when sending guys home for the score, to close out the second inning.
Following the productive second, Norwich just couldn’t seem to get things moving in their direction again as they failed to secure another run, ultimately surrendering eight more runs to JC who would chip away the rest of the game.
Five errors in the fielding of the ball on Norwich's part ultimately helped JC earn some of the runs, compared to JC's fielding which only yielded one error on the day.
“I felt like we played a cleaner game than five errors, we had two really good double plays to get out of innings, so I felt like we played a closer game than the score said,” said Turnbull.
On the mound for Norwich for the final time was senior Gabe Gojani, as he pitched to his fellow senior Nick Murphy.
“Gabe pitched pretty good for us, he pitched to contact and then Paden (Burlison) came in and pitched one inning,” said Turnbull.
Gojani tossed out one strikeout on the evening, while only surrendering three earned runs.
Norwich batters: Gabe Gojani 2-4 with a run, John Predmore 1-4 with a run, Jake Walsh 1-3, and Paden Burlison 1-2 with an RBI.
On the mound for JC was Isaiah Colgan who struck out 11 Norwich batters in a shutdown effort from the Wildcat.
“I told them all how much I appreciated them at the end of the game. I really cant remember a group of kids that I have had more fun with and that I enjoyed being around more than these guys,” said Turnbull. “Obviously everyone wants to win, but I enjoyed being around these guys. I am really going to miss the seniors. Each of the seniors is a special kid in their own way and they brought a different element to the team, we're gonna really miss them, I leaned on them a lot.”
Norwich baseball seniors: John Predmore, Gabe Gojani, Nick Murphy and Jake Walsh.
Assistant coach for Norwich Nick McCullough joined Turnbull by saying, “They're definitely my favorite group of seniors in my short time here coaching. Hard working, showed up everyday, and expecting to win.”
Norwich finished the season at just 1-16-1 as an overall record, and despite the admitted enjoyment from the team throughout the season will be looking for some improved success in the wins column come next season.
“We have a lot of guys coming back and we will have a lot of younger guys coming up as well next year. I'm gonna miss these guys next season, but I am excited for next year, we have a good group of guys coming up,” said Turnbull.
