Three solid innings produce a win for Greene softball
GREENE – The Greene varsity softball team hosted their final game at home on their softball diamond on May 12, coming away with dramatic 15-14 win over Marathon.
In the evenly matched game that saw each team record 16-hits a piece, it was Marathon that would play the cleaner game producing only two errors on the night and scoring in six of the seven innings.
However, despite the five errors on Greene's side, The Lady Trojans managed to string together three solid five run innings in the third, fourth and fifth to secure the 15 runs needed to edge Marathon.
Down 6-0 heading into the third inning, Alex Thompson stepped up to bat to get the first of many RBI's on the evening for Greene. Thompson connected with the ball, earning a double to right field and sending Abbey Sands home for a run.
During this 15-run onslaught from Greene in the middle of the game, their pitching and defense only surrendered three runs to Marathon.
Pitching for Greene was Alex Thompson, who ultimately threw 174 pitches in the seven innings earning 94-strikes and four strikeouts.
Greene would hold on late for the one run win, when Marathon attempted a rally late in seventh posting four runs of their own, drawing the final score to 15-14.
Greene then prepared to travel to Herkimer that coming weekend to host the Emma Durrant Memorial Tournament.
