Oxford softball reaches season goal in final game
OTSELIC VALLEY – The Oxford varsity softball team concluded their 2016 season in fashion this past Wednesday, May 11, by defeating Otselic Valley 24-5.
“They did a wonderful job, they really worked hard. They hit really well this evening, they were patient, we had a lot of strikeouts on our side, but we had 13-hits,” said head coach Heather Pizza of her teams performance.
Oxford would lay on the runs early on with six in the first inning and four in the second inning; while OV attempted to keep pace scoring exactly half of the Blackhawks total in runs with three in the first and two in the second.
“We had quite a few stolen bases, the girls are always very aggressive with base running,” said Pizza.
Oxford would use the aggressive base-running in the game to earn an impressive seven stolen bases, something that heavily contributed to the massive win to end the season.
Already up 10-5 heading into the third inning, Oxford enjoyed a massive inning in the third when they scored eight additional runs.
Pitching for Oxford on the day was Karly Marshman, who pitched the entire five innings before mercy ruling OV. Marshman gained eight strikeouts in that five inning stretch, only walking five OV batters.
“Karly Marshman pitched excellent tonight for us,” said Pizza.
Oxford softball gave their three graduating seniors –Corbin Wright, Emilee Eldred, and Rachel Seiler – one final win as an Oxford Blackhawk.
Oxford batters: Lauren Cobb 3-4 with three runs and two RBI's, Allison Beckwith 0-2 with three runs, Raigen Ehly 1-2 with four runs and one RBI, Rachel Seiler 4-4 with five runs and two RBI's, Karly Marshman 2-2 with four runs and one RBI, Emilee Eldred 0-4 with two runs and three RBI's, Layla Kriz 3-3 with two runs and four RBI's, and Jessie Howe 0-3 with a run. Seiler also managed to knock home a home-run on the night.
“I really wanted to end on a high note and I think we did that,” said Pizza.
Oxford concluded their season at 5-11 overall with the 24-5 win, and will look for their improvement to continue into next season as they return the majority of their squad for 2017.
