Late mistakes lead to Bobcat win
AFTON – Powerhouse varsity softball team, Afton dropped a late inning loss to the girls of Bainbridge-Guilford at 7-5, on May 11.
The Bobcats of BG would earn the early game lead over Afton after earning one run in the first inning and and two more in the second. However, Afton would secure the tie with a three-run inning in the third, only to take the late game lead by one with a run in the sixth, leading 4-3 at the time.
Riley Smith of BG would start the game on the mound, pitching the first two innings before Kori Thornton came in in relief for the remaining five innings.
Smith would manage an impressive five strikeouts in just two innings, while Thornton added on another six in the final five innings.
It was an error ridden seventh inning collapse that allowed BG back into the game, as they scored four runs to claim the lead late.
The four run onslaught was too much for Afton to overcome late, as they failed to match BG, only scoring one run with their final at bats.
BG played an error free game with only four hits, while Afton suffered seven errors while outhitting the Bobcats with eight hits on the night.
BG batters: Kori Thornton 0-2 with two runs, Alli Miller 0-3 with a run, Megan Palmatier 0-4 with a run, Alyssa Hovey 1-4 with an RBI, Shayla Baldwin 1-4, Jillian Cannistra 2-3 with a run and an RBI, Morgan Swartwout 0-3 with a run, and Riley Smith 0-2 with a run.
BG (9-6) and Afton will both now await sectional play in the near future.
