Major General Peter Lennon to speak at New Berlin Memorial Day ceremony

NEW BERLIN – Frank H. Arnold Post 348 of the American Legion is pleased to announce that Major General Peter S. Lennon, a graduate of New Berlin Central, will be the guest speaker at the Memorial Day services to be held in the Village of New Berlin.
Lennon is the son of the late Dr. Donald and Mrs. Louise Lennon and grew up in the New Berlin area. Upon graduation from New Berlin Central School in 1972, he was awarded an Army ROTC scholarship and attended Bucknell University in Pennsylvania to receive a double degree in civil engineering.
In 1977, he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Army Transportation Corps. Following officer training at Ft. Eustis, Virginia, he was assigned to the 8th Infantry Division in Germany for three and a half years during the height of the Cold War. His next duty assignment was with the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado. At the end of this assignment, he transitioned to Reserve Status in order to pursue a civilian career as a transportation engineer and analyst for the Department of Defense in the Washington DC area.
Following the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001, Lennon was re-called to active duty in support of the War on Terrorism. Serving as a transportation planner in Baghdad, Iraq in the months following the initial invasion, he was selected by Ambassador Paul Bremer to serve as the operational lead for the United Nations’ multi-billion dollar Oil for Food Program.
In 2008 and 2009, Lennon served as the deputy director of logistics for the United States Central Command under General David Petraeus. In this capacity, he was the lead architect for the creation of the international network of re-supply routes into northern Afghanistan. Later, while based in Kuwait, he oversaw the shipment of military equipment, supplies and personnel out of Iraq during the drawdown and the build-up of forces in Afghanistan.
Following his return to the United States and commands of key logistics units in Pennsylvania and New Orleans, Louisiana, Lennon was selected in 2014 to serve as deputy commander for the United States Army Reserve Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In this capacity, he oversees those commands responsible for training of and support to nearly 180,000 Army Reserve soldiers throughout the United States.
Lennon is married to the former Elaine Rovazzi, who is originally from Little Falls, NY.
Memorial Day observances will start with a parade at 9:30 a.m. leaving Hyde Park and proceeding south on North Main Street and entering the former central school lawn (Milford Academy) on South Main Street, where the ceremonies will take place at approximately 10 a.m.
The following order of march is suggested: American Legion Auxillary, Unadilla Valley Central School Band, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Pittsfield Fire Department, New Berlin Fire Department, and any other organization or units that want to take part.
Any organization is invited to participate that wishes to honor the day. All those marching should have their units at Hyde Park between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
Post 348 asks all people of the area to honor the day with display of the national flag and observance of the true meaning of Memorial Day.
All legion members who are able to take part in the parade will need to be at the legion home by 9 a.m. Anyone unable to march should try to be in front of the school on the terraces by 9:45 a.m. or as soon as the parade ends to show their support.
An open house will be held after the ceremonies. Refreshments will be provided.
