Reilly and Race heading to states after stellar performances

VESTAL – The entire scope of varsity track and field athletes from all classes in Section IV met in Vestal last week, Thursday, June 2, for a final chance to qualify for a trip to the upcoming New York State Championships.
Out of all the Section IV teams, Chenango County was represented by student athletes from Norwich, Greene, Unadilla Valley, Bainbridge-Guilford, and Harpursville-Afton.
Norwich's State Qualifiers:
Despite most of the Norwich boys completing their 2016 season with the conclusion of this years State Qualifier, two will be continuing their campaigns, senior Thomas Reilly and sophomore Zack Race.
• Race, a first year track athlete, will impressively be heading to Syracuse for the state meet later on this week in two events, the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
In the 100 meter dash Race first took to the track in the third heat of the semi-finals, where he would qualify for the finals after running an 11:51.
With a chance to head to states – as long as he finished top two in Class B – Race sped down the track in the finals to the tune of an 11:34, placing fourth overall and locking up his first event he will be competing in in the state meet. The eventual winner of the 100, Sincere Williamson, a junior from Binghamton would run a time of 10.97.
In the 200 meter dash, Race would claim another trip to the finals, after he posted a time of 23.53 in third heat of the semi-finals.
Once again Race was pitted up against some fierce competition, as Sincere Williamson of Binghamton would claim the top spot on the podium once again with a 22.15 time. Nevertheless, the competition would not slow Race down, as he would qualify for states, claiming a third place spot with his time of 22.83.
• Thomas Reilly, a senior reigned supreme as the top dog in the shot put arena, after his performance, which earned him a first place overall finish in the event and trip to states, with his throw of 54', a personal best.
“Currently the second best throw in Norwich history and first boy thrower to go to states in outdoor track in twenty plus years,” said Norwich's throwing coach Thomas Stoddard.
Reilly will now be chasing the NYS State Championship title for Division II schools, a school record of 54'9”, and a chance to go down as arguably The Tornado’s best thrower ever, or at least in recent memory.
“Piggybacking on his sectional championship from indoor track, (Reilly) is ranked tied for second in division II and top eight overall in the state. Big battle for division II state champ next week,” said Stoddard.
Notably, Coach Stoddard may have very well been one of the throwers from Norwich to last make it to the state level, and will now be heading back their as the coach of Reilly.

4x100 relay: The Norwich 4x100 meter relay would be the sole team from Chenango County to compete in this event. The team of David Berger, Zack Race, Drew Walsh, and Eric Conant would attempt to claim a top spot in the event when they ran a seasons best 46.01. However, unfortunately for the Tornado boys they would fall short of stepping on the podium after their seasons best time failed to earn them a trip to the finals. Binghamton's team would earn the win with a time of 42.50 in the finals.
100 meter dash: Despite the outstanding times from Race, other local athletes would see action in the 100 meter dash as well. Norwich's Eric Conant would compete in the event, and during the second heat of the semi-finals, Conant would secure a time of 12.28.
That very same semi-finals heat Conant would be pitted against Dan Norris of Bainbridge-Guilford. Norris would run a solid 11.77 in that heat.
The third heat would see Race of Norwich compete against Chris Stirone of Unadilla Valley. Stirone would also run a solid time of 12.02. All three, Conant, Norris and Stirone would go down battling but would fail to earn trips to the finals.
800 meter dash: The first heat of the mens 800 meter dash, Tyler Simmons of Unadilla Valley would run a 2:07.78, he would place nineteenth overall. Norwich's Gabe Gawronski and Noah Bufalini would run solid times in the second heat of the event. Gawronski would earn a spot on the podium with a sixth place finish, with his time of 2:02.63. Bufalini would earn a tenth place spot with his time of 2:05.41, a personal best time for him.
200 meter dash: Multiple Chenango County Athletes would compete in the 200 meter dash. Norwich's Eric Conant would compete in the first heat of the event running a 25.22.
Norwich's Race would compete against BG's Norris and Unadilla Valley's Ben Avolio. Norris would earn a trip to the finals with his run of 23.53. While Avolio's 24.83 and Conant would not earn a trip to the finals. Norris would eventually take seventh overall with a 23.668 in the finals.
400 meter dash: Avolio of UV would earn the win in the first heat of the event when he posted an impressive time of 53.78, placing him thirteenth overall.
400 meter hurdles: Greg Wynter of Greene would represent the Trojans with his time of 1:05.49 in the event when he took to the track in the first heat of the event. Norwich's Connor Nial would run a 1:02.62 in the second heat of the 400 meter hurdles. Nial would place thirteenth overall, while Wynter would place twenty-first.
Steeplechase: An event that always draws big crowds due to its nature of having pits of water the runners must run through, saw Norwich's Ben Ericksen earn a ninth place finish with his time of 10:20.70. While Harpursville-Afton would see Matt Johnson earn a seventeenth place finish overall with his time of 11:31.49.
4x400 relay: The last event of the day saw the team from Norwich – Scott Tomanocy, Noah Bufalini, Connor Supensky, and Gabe Gawronski – take a twelfth place finish when they ran a 3:44.02.
Long jump: The two Chenango County athletes, Eric Conant of Norwich and Chris Stirone of UV would look to compete in the event, however both failed to reach the podium. Conant would finish in fourteenth overall with a jump of 17'9.75” and Strirone would finish in sixteenth with a jump of 16'10.25”.
Triple Jump: Norwich's Jordan Vinal would secure a sixteenth place finish in the event when he managed a jump of 38'4.75”.
Discus: David Bernstein of Norwich, has signed with Binghamton University for track and field, would look to make a trip to the state meet but would see a sub par outing missing his chance.

Bernstein would miss a trip to states by just one spot when he managed a third place, with a best throw of 147'7”. Reilly of Norwich would claim a seventh place finish with his throw of 130'8”.
Shot put: Reilly of Norwich would claim the top spot and a trip to states with his throw of 54'. Despite the success of Reilly, Bernstein would take to the pit to throw a 42'00.25” throw for a ninth place finish.
High jump: Marcus Granger and Tyler Simmons, both of UV would compete in the event, landing in tenth and fifteenth overall. Granger would clear the height of 5'08”, while Simmons would not have a height recorded.
Pole vault: Chris Klecha would be hot off his win in the Class C championship and would look to see how far he could push himself. Klecha would clear the height of 11'06” to narrowly miss a podium spot, coming in seventh overall.
No local athletes would compete or place in the 110 meter hurdles, 1600 meter run, or 3200 meter run.
