NORWICH – The Chenango Hellcats Legion baseball team is proud to announce their summer season home, and league opener that will be held at the Norwich High School varsity field later on today, June 8, 2016.
The game is slated to start at 6 p.m., as the the Hellcats will face off against Endicott. Opening ceremonies, as well as the first pitch will begin around 5:30 p.m. Throwing out the ceremonial first pitch will be Joe Coe, a veteran and retired law enforcement officer.
After posting a 7-7 league record last year with a 7-13 overall record in the summer of 2015, second year head coach Jason Miller is looking forward to the potential of what the 2016 squad can do.
“We were a really good team (last year), a really young team, and we're still really young this year,” said Miller. “We're hoping to be pretty tough, and be competitive(this year). But as long as they're having fun.”
Coach Miller did note that he has until June 26, to finalize the roster and potentially bring on any additional players, as the roster count sits right now around 12-players.
Of those twelve or so players, five of them are returning players: Wayne Law, Nate Sheer, Tommy Voce, Kyle Crawford, and Paden Burlison.
Following the matchup between the Hellcats and Endicott, The Hellcats will be heading out of town to a weekend long tournament.
“We belong to the Legion, our insurance is through the legion and we play in the District 6 league, which is a Legion league,” said Miller. “The Legion pays for balls, hotel rooms, umpires, pretty much everything except transportation and food. The biggest thing for this weekend – we do have two league games, Oneonta Friday night and Saturday versus Corning – I don’t really care about the wins, the biggest thing this weekend is the team building.”
Miller elected to have his returning player, Paden Burlison explain what the team did last year on a whim, as a way to build this camaraderie while away at a tournament.
“I haven’t taken this off since we bought it. Last year at our tournament we were all trying to figure out something we could do to represent us as one team,” said Burlison.
Burlison explained that the team decided to all get dog tags while up late at a WalMart, they each designed their own dog tags, in somewhat of a memorandum to the Veterans of the Legion as well as a way to stay bonded as a team.
Miller is hoping the returning players can incorporate some of the newer guys, with a similar outcome this year.
Despite the league opener happening later on today, The Hellcats have played one non-league game prior to June 8.
The Hellcats traveled to Ithaca to take on their Legion team, ultimately losing 9-2.
“The game in Ithaca was horrible, that team is not better than us,” said Miller. “Hitting-wise we did alright. I think we had seven hits, but we had 10-errors and 11-strikeouts.”
Despite the opening loss, The Hellcats will look to keep that league record clean when they take the home field for the first time later on today.
“This program is not possible without the support of our Legions and local community businesses,” said Miller.
