‘Redneck Paradise Shindig’ ready for this weekend

NORWICH – A fundraiser’s in the works to benefit the Chenango County SPCA and give music lovers the chance to connect to some of their favorite local bands this weekend.
The annual “Redneck Paradise Shindig and Hoedown” will be held at the Chenango County Fairgrounds in Norwich on Saturday. The event will feature Master of Ceremony Gene Odom of the Lynyrd Skynyrd legacy (Ronnie Van Zant’s best friend and body guard), as well as six musical acts including: Jack Webster, Bad Influence Band, LJ Gates Band, Rabbit in the Rye, Rob Blackledge, and Tumbleweed Highway.
Shows will start at 2 p.m. at the grand stand (rain or shine) on Saturday and may run into the early morning hours of 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. on Sunday. Tickets are still available for purchase for $20 each at the Chenango County SPCA on County Road 32 in Norwich. Tickets will also be available at the gate the day of the event, still at the $20 price and free for kids ages 12 and under.
Proceeds from the event benefit different organizations from year to year. This year, money raised will help the CSPCA continue its mission of caring for lost and homeless pets, adopting pets to new homes, and educating families and the community about the needs of companion animals.
“It’s going to be a fun event that will help a good cause,” said event organizer Monty Holt.
Holt, an animal lover himself, said the decision to support the CSPCA came due to the organization’s efforts to be self-supporting.
“I wasn’t aware of the reason why the (CSPCA) was not the ASPCA, so when I learned more, I wanted to donate,” said Holt. “When I learned that there are not trickle funds that come from upstairs down to the Chenango branch, I also learned they have to raise the money on their own. Being that it’s a self-supporting center, we chose to give our money to them this year.”
The Redneck Shindig and Hoedown has been going on for eight years. Traditionally held at Holt’s Norwich home, the event has now grown big enough to move to the fairgrounds for the first time.
“I had to move it,” Holt said, “and when I moved it, I decided to take it to the next level.”
This year’s Shindig will also include free camping, a bounce house for the kids, and food available from Lost Bikers Barbecue of Sherburne or Dusty’s Dairy Bar of Norwich.
Special “meet and greet” passes to get up close and personal with performers are available for purchase for an additional $20. Festival goers are also invited to bring coolers and grills with them, although glass of any kind is prohibited, as are fires and dogs.
Campers must be off the fairgrounds by noon on Sunday.
