Oxford Legion to host barbecue and concert scholarship fundraiser Saturday

OXFORD – The Fort Hill American Legion Post 376 is hosting a fundraising Pork BBQ at the Post home on June 11, from noon to 6 p.m. The Legion’s primary goal is to raise funds for graduating seniors’ scholarships. Door prizes, a raffle, and especially great food, drink, and excellent live music may make some people forget that they’re benefiting the community as they’ll be having so much fun.
The main purpose for the BBQ-Concert is to raise funds for the Legionnaire’s and Auxiliary’s high school seniors’ scholarships. Collectively, Post 376 awards approximately $1000 annually to help offset the rising cost of college tuition for children or grandchildren of American Legion members (veteran or deceased veteran members). To meet their goal, the Legionnaires, the Auxiliary, and Sons of the Legion (SAL) are proud to offer this delicious pork BBQ meal that includes draft beer and wine, and great live music by area blues/rock band, String of Pearls.
String of Pearls (aka SOP) hail from Greene, NY. Band members are Pearl “Singing Skywolf” Reed-Klein - vocals, piano, guitar, and harmonica; Eric G. Porter – guitar and vocals; Jimmy Kolet - bass guitar and vocals; and Ed Michaels - drums, harmonica, and vocals. Drummer Nick Andrews will be playing this event with them. This is clearly no ordinary “local” band; SOP is a dynamic blues/rock band packed with experience and passion.
Lead singer Pearl has a couple of impressive monikers: Dr. Reed-Klein (she has a doctorate in psychology), and “Singing Skywolf”, her Native American given name. She has performed for many years throughout New York and Pennsylvania and has opened shows for Leon Russell, John Lee Hooker Jr, Derek Allman, Jeremy Wallace, Roosevelt Dean and many others. Pearl’s powerful bluesy vocals and crowd pleasing stage performances have earned her the best name, “The Southern Tier’s Queen of the Blues.”
Aside from their own stage performances, Pearl, Eric, Jimmy and Ed’s combined musical credits are staggering. They include world tours, recordings for radio and television programs, as well as major studio recordings, and live theater performances. The list of who’s who that they’ve performed with is too long to list. While they live locally, their talent and experience is far reaching.
To go with the top notch entertainment is top notch food. The Legion is offering boneless pork loins prepared by Mickey’s BBQ volunteers. They have more than 35 years of experience and if you’ve been to a locally catered BBQ at a graduation or a community fundraiser, you’ve probably tasted their barbecued food… “always juicy and tender.” The meat preparation will be done off site (so only the pork has to smell like smoke.) They initially prepare the meat with a dry rub; a family secret blend of herbs and spices. Then the “Pig Roaster” is fueled with flavorful hickory wood to cook the pork loins. (This crew is one of only a few expert pitmasters outfitted with special rigs to cook with only logs.) The Volunteers make their own tangy barbecue sauce (another secret recipe) and it’s on the side so you can use what suits your taste. Have your pork with a roll and enjoy it with these freshly made ALA side dishes: baked beans, coleslaw, salt potatoes, and dessert cakes.
This is a 21 years and older adult event as there will be a free draft beer and wine tent, included with your admission.
This BBQ is rain or shine. Interested persons are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance as the Legion may fill up quickly if indoors. Tickets, on sale at the Legion, $25 per person, include a door prize raffle ticket. Another way to get tickets is to listen to 95.3 BIG KAT, the “Country with attitude” radio station to win! $10 for take-outs; beverages not included.
The historic Fort Hill Post #376 is located at 17 S. Washington Avenue. (For donations, mail to ALA, PO Box 832, Oxford.) For inquiries: Events@OxfordNY.com or call the Post at (607) 843-8166. The ALA is on the web: oxford-ala.chenango.org
