Jumping her way into history

NORWICH – Norwich will have one female representative at this year’s New York State Outdoor Track and Field meet, sophomore Emily Shattuck will be competing in the long jump for the Tornado.
Shattuck unlike, her counterparts of Thomas Reilly and Zack Race, has quite a few years under her belt when it comes to the sport despite her young age. Shattuck began track as a seventh grader and has quickly progressed to an elite level. In just eighth grade she made her first trip to the state tournament in outdoor, while also going to nationals for freshman jumps that very same year.
Now some two tears later, Shattuck will be heading back to the big stage, where she has her sights set on the higher prize, medaling in her event and potentially breaking the school record along the way.
Shattuck had battled through various injuries in the early parts of the 2016 outdoor season, however, she has returned to her form of late and posted her last three jumps – in the long jump – as personal bests.
“The last three weeks she has been jumping fantastic, she should go in confident,” said Norwich head coach Shaun Horan. “She has pr'd (gotten a personal best), three of her best jumps in the last two weeks.”
Currently Shattuck is just three inches away from breaking Dana Stiles Norwich High School's long jump record, which has stood since the mid-90's. Stiles posted a record jump of 17'7”, while Shattuck has a current best jump of 17'4.75”.
“I had no idea I still had the record, it's about time it gets broken and it sounds like Emily will be the one to do it,” said Dana Stiles (Dana Stiles-Giampietro). “I wish her the best of luck at tomorrow's meet and am excited for her to achieve her personal best.”
Notably, Shattuck will be right in the competition at the state meet, as the top eight jumpers she will face all jump somewhere in the range of 17' to 17'6”.
When asked what she likes most about track, Shattuck said, “I don’t know, I like everything about it. It’s a big family, I like my coaches. I like competitive things, so I like competing obviously. I almost made it to states for the 100 too and I was really upset I didn’t. Hopefully I'm making it for the 100 next year too.”
The competitive edge truly shines through with Shattuck who will need that extra vault off her board when she flies down that runway later on today.
The NYS Championships will begin later on today, June 10, in Cicero-North Syracuse. Long jump is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
“I want to get over 18', right now were hoping for the school record which is 17'7”, I want to get that record,” said Shattuck.
“We started the season together, and we're going to finish it together. That is our goal,” added Norwich's jumping coach Scottie Decker.
