NORWICH – After a few months of planning, Norwich High School freshmen, Hannah and Brenna Baker, held the First PMC Kids Ride in New York State. The event was part of their ongoing fundraising efforts to help fight cancer.
After receiving approval from the Chenango County Fairgrounds Board of Directors, the freshmen twins hosted a PMC Kids Ride at the fairgrounds on Sunday, June 12, 2016. Numerous volunteers were on site to help make the event a success. Ryan Revoir from Rock Star DJ Service, donated his talent to provide the musical entertainment. Shannon Gawronski provided her fitness expertise to warm up the riders, many of whom had their faces painted, enjoyed refreshing treats and played games before the start of the ride. Kinkajous Frozen Yogurt was also onsite and generously donated frozen treats to the participants and volunteers. Chuck Larcom who traveled with his wife and daughter from Rhode Island conducted safety checks and repairs on participant's bikes and helmets. Kaitlyn Korver of Korver Photography was also on hand taking pictures of this historical event.
Several students from the Norwich City School District, including Megan Burke, Taylor Hansen, Nicole Jeffrey, Saige Benedict, Triniti Myers, Destiny Gladney, Taylor Ford, Noah Marvin, Bradley Walley and Alexis Polcare volunteered their time to entertain, photograph and assist the riders during the event.
The ride started following a beautiful rendition of the national anthem sung by Ms. Idil Oguz, who is a music teacher at the Norwich Middle School. The riders ranging in age from 2 to 15, excitedly rode their bikes around designated routes within the fairgrounds. Each rider pledged to raise a minimum of $25 for the event. Four participants, Brayden Lawrence, Kasmira Cartland, Kenzie Cartland and Ella Foote, reached the “heavy hitter” level raising a minimum of $250. There was also one “breakaway” level rider, Nathaniel Ray, who raised over $750. These riders were honored with certificates of achievement and a sackpack or back pack from PMC and New Balance. Other participants received prizes and gifts from raffles held at the event.
Norwich City Mayor Christine Carnrike attended the event to support of the efforts of these two high school student-leaders. Also on hand was Joe Caputo and Lois Lawrence, both pillars of our community, who cheered the riders on as they rode around the fairgrounds.
Through their efforts, hard work and dedication as well as the tremendous generosity of our community, Hannah and Brenna Baker, raised over $11,500 to help find a cure for cancer. They are very grateful to all of the donors, sponsors, volunteers and participants who contributed to making this event successful.
They plan to make this an annual event for our great community. They can be reached at PMCkidsridenorwichny@yahoo.com if you have any questions or ideas for them.
