‘We got out errored’

NORWICH – The Norwich American Legion Hellcat baseball squad took to the diamond on Wednesday, June 15, to host Maine-Endwell Post 1700, a game in which nothing seemed to go in favor of Norwich, as they lost 9-1.
Maine-Endwell would earn the early points when they first jumped on the board, storming to a 3-0 lead over the Hellcats in the second inning.
The Hellcats would give three different individuals opportunities on the mound, as Conor Graven-Briggs would pitch for the first four innings before Kyle Crawford and Paden Burlison would each come in. Graven-Briggs and Crawford would struggle some at the plate, recording no strikeouts, while Burlison would notch two under his belt.
For Maine-Endwell pitching seemed to go more their way, as Isham would stand in as the lone pitcher in the contest, striking out six Hellcat batters.
The sub-par pitching from the Hellcats was only amplified when their defense recorded an astounding seven errors in the game. Maine-Endwell would take full advantage of the mistakes, as they would only record three of their own.
“Later on in the game, fell apart a bit and it got contagious,” said Hellcat head coach Jason Miller. “We weren’t out hit just got out errored.”
As Miller did say, The Hellcats would see their bats connect with the ball just as many times as Maine-Endwell. However, the Hellcats would fail to string together as many runs as Maine-Endwell of those seven hits, only securing one run to Maine-Endwell’s nine.
“Our bats are hot, Conor (Graven-Briggs) was 3-3 and he scored our run,” said coach Miller. “We still had to work to get that run. He (Conor) had a base hit to get on, stole second, and was in the process of stealing third. Conor was already moving so I sent him anyway, we had two outs and he made the play.”
This lone run would come in the sixth inning for the Hellcats, as they found themselves already down 7-0 before the run finally came in.
“They still might have beat us without the errors, but the errors hurt us . That team is the best we have seen so far, but they are definitely beatable,” said coach Miller.
Hellcat batters: Joe Devona 1-4, Paden Burlison 1-4, Vince Caiati 1-3, Conor Graven-Briggs 3-3 with a run, and Jon Heggie 1-3.
The Hellcats were scheduled to host Ithaca on Thursday, June 16, at 6 p.m., however, no score was reported. The Hellcats are slated to head to Whitney Point for double-header action on Saturday, June 18. The first game will begin at 1 p.m., while the second will start at 4 p.m. All scores and games will be reported in Mondays Edition of The Evening Sun, if the outcomes are made known.
