Marshall Tucker Band to headline 5th annual ‘Rock in the Park’

BAINBRIDGE - As in previous years, the live outdoor entertainment offerings of Chenango County for 2016 is indeed a crowded house, given the narrow window of cooperative weather central upstate New York is blessed with.
Nonetheless, a husband-and-wife duo have learned first-hand that success in that somewhat over-saturated market is proportionate to the amount of hard work—and sacrifice—they put into it; much to the advantage of the place they call home.
Over the course of the past five years, Rock in the Park organizers Jason and Erica Hall have leveraged the power of popular world class touring headliners to the benefit of area nonprofits in need of a helping hand.
This year’s headliner, The Marshall Tucker Band, will share the stage with a couple local acts much in the same vein, genre-wise. Both Tumbleweed Highway and Woodshed Prophets boast a strong following up and down the east coast, the latter of the two performing at every Rock in the Park concert since its inception in 2012.
Wreckless Marci, a Binghamton based cover band, will return to the venue for a follow-up appearance as well.
“We feel very fortunate that we have the opportunity to support the SPCA while sharing our original music right here at home,” said Nate Gross, lead singer and guitarist of Tumbleweed Highway. “It’s a great venue for a great cause, and we’re glad to be a part of it.”
When asked how the fundraising concert came into fruition, Jason Hall, who works as a sponsorship executive at Tioga Downs raceway in Nichols, admitted “Well, I really feel that everyone has something inside of them that wants to give back. With my job, I’m fortunate enough to have the ability to do just that.”
Given his position in the sponsorship and promotion industry, putting his talent and contact list to task for his local community was a natural and fluid move that just made sense for Hall.
In years prior, the Bainbridge event raised thousands of dollars for the local chapter of the Toys for Tots organization; and from humble beginnings, the Halls have made it an annual goal of out-doing the year before.
So far their determination has paid off.
“I have kids, and I understand the importance of being able to provide for them around the holidays, so needless to say the Toys for Tots organization was near and dear to me as a parent, and it was a great organization to get our foot in the door donation-wise,” said Hall.
Another thing that the Halls understand is the signifiicance of spreading the wealth amoung area charities. “We like to change-up who we gift the proceeds to every few years, and we know that nonprofits — especially in areas such as Chenango County — need as much help as they can get.”
Given the unprecedented (or at least unanticipated) success of the fourth annual event that featured national headliner Rusted Root, Rock in the Park was able to present the Chenango SPCA with a check written for more than $10,000 in late July of 2015 when all was said and done.
“It was the largest donation that we have been able to give to a nonprofit since we began,” said Jason Hall, “and we hope that we’re able to cut a check at least that big after this year’s event.”
As a family affair, Jason and Erica dedicate much of their summer to the organization and all of its internal mechanisms.
“Every year, we ask each other ‘are we going to do it again next year?’ and the answer always ends up ‘yes,’” according to Jason Hall. “The key for us is keeping the benefit local, for local nonprofit. We truly understand the local needs of our community, and we don’t want the money to leave the area,” said Hall. “Last year, not only did we give to the Chenango SPCA, but we also were able to give back by donating a sum to the Town of Bainbridge who only ever charges us a $50 fee to use the facility for the day, so I think we may start giving back to multiple area charities in the future. We think that’s a good idea.”
“It’s a lot of work, it really is,” said Hall, who admits that he’s put a great deal on his wife’s plate. “Erica does a great job with the charity side of the operation, and I’m very lucky to have her on my team.”
The 5th annual Rock in the Park will be held Saturday, July 9 at General Clinton Park in Bainbridge. Gates open at 11 a.m., and music is slated to begin at noon.
Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, Snips and Snails consignment Shop in Bainbridge, the Chenango SPCA or at Tioga Downs raceway.
