Sherburne candidate rebukes Trump comment
SHERBURNE – New York State Senate hopeful Jermaine Bagnall-Graham is condemning Donald Trump’s contentious comments about a Gold Star family and is urging current senator James Seward to follow suit.
Bagnall-Graham, a Democrat and Army veteran himself, said the recent war of words between the Republican presidential nominee and the Muslim family of a fallen war veteran simply isn’t reflective of American values.
“As a Veteran myself, I understand that Gold Star families deserve the nation’s utmost respect,” Bagnall-Graham said in a statement Wednesday. “Gold Star families pay an incredible sacrifice that most will never truly understand.”
Trump is being criticized for remarks made with implication that the soldier’s mother had not spoken at the Democratic National Convention last week because of female subservience expected in some traditional strains of Islam.
“What Mr. Trump said about the Khans is not fitting of a candidate for public office and not reflective of any American values,” Bagnall-Graham said. “I publicly denounce Mr. Trump’s statement and call on my opponent, Senator Seward, to do the same.”
Bagnall-Graham is a political newcomer who is challenging longtime Republican Senator James Seward in New York’s 51st State Senate District. The district encompasses all of Cortland, Otsego, and Schoharie counties, as well as parts of Cayuga, Chenango, Delaware, Herkimer, Tompkins, and Ulster counties.
