Late night blaze destroys Brisben garage
GREENE – Mutual Aid fire crews from several area companies reported to the scene of a fully involved garage fire in the Brisben Fire district at 129 King Rd, town of Greene late Monday evening.
Initially, the call came into Chenango County 911 call center as a barn structure at 9:25 p.m., but was reclassified as a fully involved garage fire upon assesment of first responders to the scene.
Mutual Aid Companies from Greene, Oxford, Brisben, and Smithville along with County Fire Coordinators were on the scene of the blaze, now deemed a total loss, and the glow of the flames and smoke could be seen from a distance of nearly five miles away.
Chenango County tax records indicate that the property is owned by Robert and Shirley Alger of Greene.
Neighbors adjacent to the property witnessed flames early on and heard several explosions, thought to be propane or fuel tanks. It's believed that the garage housed at least one automobile, lawn equipment and antiques.
Shortly after arriving, Firefighters could be seen dousing other barn structures as well as the south side of a residence on the property within close proximity to the garage.
Firefighters on scene attributed the age and construction of the structure to how quickly and intense the fire spread.
New York State Police Troopers and Chenango County Sheriff's Deputies were also on scene to assist.
While EMS from Greene were on standby at the scene, no injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
