County to partake in Labor Day DWI crackdown

CHENANGO COUNTY – Chenango County police agencies will participate in a statewide DWI crackdown around the Labor Day holiday in an effort to keep impaired drivers off the roads.
Beginning on August 19, and lasting until September 5, New York State Police, County Sheriff, and municipal law enforcements across the state will be out in full force as they aim to reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving around the holiday weekend.
Research shows that high-visibility enforcement can reduce impaired driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent, and sobriety checkpoints play a key role in raising awareness about the issue.
During the Labor Day holiday period in 2014, 51 percent of drivers involved in fatal accidents between the ages of 18 and 34 had BAC levels of .08 or higher. Of those accidents, 83 percent of drunk-driving crash fatalities occurred between 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m.
The STOP-DWI Labor Day weekend crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by the NYS STOP-DWI Association with additional funding provided by the STOP-DWI Foundation and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
