Brenon Maynard becomes youngest CCC champ

Last weekend on August 20 and 21, Canasawacta Country Club held their annual club championship. 58 players came out to compete in the tournament under tough conditions, and it was incoming high school senior Brenon Maynard who had the lowest overall gross score, shooting a score of 144 over two rounds. CCC owner Tim Carson confirmed that Maynard is the youngest club champion to date.
“It feels great to win it,” said Maynard, “it didn’t hit me at first the accomplishment that it was until it was mentioned that I will be put on the wall of fame with all the great past champions, including Bob Branham.”
Maynard was competing against Branham for the championship as well as Tom Muserilli, who would both tie for the second overall gross score, each shooting a score of 147 over two rounds.
While the championship typically includes three rounds of play, Carson said that the third round was cancelled due to rain.
Maynard said, “The first round Saturday was a nice day. The wind was calm and the greens were somewhat soft, making it easy to score well. I shot even par the first day, I knew it was a decent score but didn’t think that it would be the lead at the end of the day.
“It was much more windy Sunday morning and a tough day to judge yardages. I played pretty well for the conditions, shooting two-over. Again, I didn’t feel that it would be good enough for the lead. I found out I had a three shot lead going into the third and final round. We teed off for the last round but with incoming rain we weren’t sure if we would be able to play. We played hole one and then they blew the horn. After sitting around for an hour and a half under the trees between holes one and two, I got a text saying that Tim had called it and I had won.”
This is Maynard’s second time competing in the club championship, but he says that he hasn’t played in it a few years. He is a member of the Norwich High School golf team that just won DiNunzio Championship in Endicott this week.
Other notable scores include Tyler Cevasco who won the men’s overall net score which includes the players’ handicaps with a score of 127.
Stu Hughes had the low-score for the senior gross tournament with a score of 146, and Jeff Johnson had the senior net low-score with a score of 131.
Carson said that the first round of competition for the women’s division was halted after 11 holes of play and will resume next weekend.
