Search for heroic strangers in fiery Binghamton crash still ongoing

BINGHAMTON – After a tractor-trailer plowed through afternoon traffic on Route 17 East, in Binghamton, resulting in a 10-car pileup, dashcam footage emerged showcasing the heroism of some brave Binghamton individuals.
The footage, which has now been viewed over one million times, was posted to Facebook by Binghamton Mayor Rich David in an attempt to identify the courageous citizens. It shows a disabled, burning vehicle on the side of the highway engulfed by flames. The driver of the vehicle was reportedly too shocked by the impact of the crash to escape.
Numerous individuals are seen with fire extinguishers quenching the flames, while three other good samaritans pull the terrified woman from the vehicle.
The accident occurred on Thursday, Aug. 25, when a tractor-trailer carrying stone blocks, operated by 74-year-old Allen R. Kirkpatrick, of Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, was unable to stop, and subsequently collided with multiple vehicles, causing the pileup. Although the tractor-trailer reportedly had inadequate brakes, Police believe that traffic congestion, due to construction along Route 17, was the major cause of the accident.
Miraculously, the accident resulted in no fatalities.
In the Facebook post, Mayor David says, “We're still attempting to identify those seen on video so they can be recognized for their efforts.” He concludes his post with the words, “Binghamton is safer because of you.”
It is reported that two of the people in the video have been identified, but the Mayor is waiting for all of the individuals to be determined before they can be formally recognized for their actions, and have an opportunity to meet the woman whom they saved.
