40th Annual Antiques Show & canal boat derby to be held Sunday
NORWICH – One of the most anticipated antique shows this side of Bouckville will stake claim at the county fairgrounds in Norwich this Labor Day weekend as the Chenango County Historical Society kicks off its 40th Annual Antiques Show and Canal Boat Derby.
Gates to the event will open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, giving pickers and collectors of all things old and rusty the opportunity to spot that once-in-a-lifetime find for their collection. Admission to the event is just $4 per person.
In addition, the Historical Society's annual Chenango Canal Boat Derby will be making waves again this year with dozens of model canal boats afloat down a small portion of the Chenango River, from the East Main Street bridge to the finish line at the edge of the fairgrounds.
Tickets for the boat derby can be purchased at the Historical Society on Rexford Street in Norwich for $10 for a single, or three for $25, and this year’s first place winner will receive a $500 cash reward. Other prizes include gift certificates, services and other item donations from nearly 60 businesses and individual supporters from throughout the county. The boat race starts at noon.
Proceeds raised during the events will directly support the Historical Society and their mission to educate through their use of a variety of exhibits, projects and various activities.
With the weekend weather forecast predicting favorable conditions, the event's organizers say that they're expecting a great turnout. “Especially with the antiques show and boat derby combined this year, there might be some people who will want to try the boat derby and stay for the antiques show. It’s really a fun event and something for the whole family,” said Sarah Mahan, Chenango County Historical Society Executive Director.
More than 30 venders are slated for this years antiques show, selling anything from glassware to tools, dolls to baseball memorabilia, toys to furniture – and anything and everything in between.
“We’re seeing the number of vendors go up this year,” Mahan noted. “We owe a big thank you to all the supporters and people who have donated.”
In addition, the antiques show this year features ice cream from Gilligan’s of Sherburne along with representatives from the Northeast Classic Car Museum will also be on hand with its annual Mustang raffle that puts ticket buyers in a drawing for a powder blue 1965 Mustang convertible.
