CHENANGO COUNTY – Chenango County is in full swing for their 2016 fall sporting season as a multitude of varsity level soccer contests have gotten underway already.
• The Bainbridge-Guilford girls varsity soccer team has gotten off to a hot start as they squared off against Unadilla Valley on August 31.
“We came into the game with a few jitters and some new people on the field,” said UV head coach Diane Hayes. “I am pleased the way the team played. We have some work to do before we host Delhi next week.”
BG would jump out on top of UV when with an early lead at 1-0 before Shelby Meade of BG earned the insurance goal at 2-0 later in the game.
Abbie Oglesby of UV would defend their goal fervently however, as she recorded six saves in the net. However, for UV the finishing touch just wasnt their as their 15 shots on goal couldnt land for any marks going their way.
UV (0-1) plays next against Delhi on Sept. 8 at home; while the Bobcats of BG (1-0) will be traveling to Walton for a game at 10 a.m. on Sept. 2.
• The Bainbridge-Guilford boys would see action against Milford, ultimately losing with a scoreline of 2-0.
The potent Milford offense would secure those two goals off of theor eight shots on goal, with only two corners. The Bobcats would see their offense secure two less shots, six shots, while enjoyimg two more corners at four. It was Garrett Mertz who would enjoy the most success on the day as his two goals for Milford, with one assist from Ben Koncher would carry them to victory over the Bobcats.
The goalkeeps of each squad would show equal productiveity when each Kyle Tiffany of Milford and Sean Jones of BG netted six saves in the contest.
• Unadilla Valley would see their squad drop to 0-2 on the season after an experienced Harpursville-Afton team came to town for the 3-1 loss.
“Afton scored in the first half when Jaymie Ticknor heading in a ball from Mikey Graven-Briggs three minutes into play. UV netted an equalizer of a combination of passes which lead to Dylan Nichols booting home a Than Garry assist,” said UV head coach Ryan Houck. “In the second half, Afton netted two more goals. First Graven-Briggs dribbled around a storm defender for the finish. Then Ticknor knocked home his second (goal) on a ball bouncing around inside the 18 off a corner kick.”
UV would see an equal number of shots on goal and corners, at 7; while Afton would be on the offensive with 10 shots on goal and six corners.
The Storm of UV (0-2) will next see action action against Delhi at home on Sept. 2, at 1:30 p.m.
• The Greene boys soccer team demolished Sidney at home August 30, winning in convincing fashion at 5-0.
While only holding a halftime lead of 1-0 off of Bobby Mills, the Trojans would see Kevin Halsteter and River McCumiskey each awaken in the second half for two goals a piece.
Greene would split time in the net as both Ryan Lohsen and Kevin Gyurik would save two shots on goal for the Trojans.
As the job for the Trojans in the net may have been easier on this particular day, their offense rained shots at Sidney's goalkeeper as Greene would enjoy 21
shots on goal with five corners, while Sidney struggled on the top end with only those four shots on goal and no corners.
Next up for Greene boys varsity (1-0) they will play at home against Newark Valley at 3 p.m. on Sept. 2.
• The Norwich boys varsity soccer team would drop their season opener to Chenango Forks with a crushing defeat at home, losing 5-0.
It was a three goal first half that The Blue Devils enjoyed over the Tornado. While despite being in a solid hole, the Norwich boys defended valiantly in the second to only surrender two additional goals.
Norwich would ultimately end the game with no shots on the Chenango Forks goalkeeper. While on the defensive end for Norwich, Keegan Prime would enjoy a stellar day with 13 saves in the net.
“The team is a lot more committed than last year, this is a good group of boys,” said Norwich head coach Scottie Decker.
Norwich (0-1) will see action against Windsor on Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. as they will be away in that contest.
