UNADILLA VALLEY – It was the Giangreco show when the Seton Catholic Central Saints came to town to face off against Unadilla Valley for the season opener of their football season.
The Saints would score early and often as their passing attack flourished against the UV secondary for much of the game.
At 14-0, following two receiving touchdowns from star wide receiver Giangreco, Seton would surrender their first score of the night to the home UV.
“Danny Crowley from Seton is one of the best quarterbacks in section IV and proved it tonight,” said Unadilla Valley head coach Ray Dayton.
The rushing touchdown from Caleb Simmonds would draw the score to a close 14-7. However, the Crowley to Giangreco combination would ignite once again as they combined for another two scores in the half, as well as a receiving touchdown from Crowley to Ragsdale, making the halftime break score 26-8.
Following the half the ground and pound rushing attack of the Storm would awaken providing some life to the team as they combined for 22 points in the third quarter. However, despite a valiant effort on the ground – Peyton Stirone 24 for 197 yards and two touchdowns, Caleb Simmonds 11 for 72 yards and two touchdowns, Bob Sponable 9 for 41 yards, and Levi Rifanburg 1 for -4 yards – the sheer amount of passes thrown at Unadilla Valley was too much for the them to overcome.
Seton would blank UV in the fourth while Ragsdala and Giangreco each nabbed another score a piece for the Saints. Giangreco would finish with five receiving touchdowns, while Ragsdala would grab two for himself. Seton quarterback Danny Crowley would toss seven touchdowns in his season opener.
“We ran the ball well but had too many mistakes too win. Kids fought hard and came back in the second half to make a game, but ran out of gas.,” said coach Dayton.
Unadilla Valley (0-1) will play next at Delhi/Charlotte Valley on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 1:30 p.m.
