Norwich girls soccer claims tournament title
GREENE – The Greene girls soccer tournament would see four local teams from around the area – Greene, Norwich, Oxford and Edmeston – square off over a two day tournament played on Thursday, Sept. 8 and Saturday, Sept. 10.
Norwich ultimately emerged the victors on the day when they defeated Oxford 3-0 in the finals on Saturday. Norwich would advance to the finals on Saturday evening after defeating Edmeston 4-2 in overtime – Hunter Cole, Gabby Mirabito, Taylor Hansen, and Hannah Klockowski each netted a goal in this game for the Tornado. Oxford would advance to the finals after defeating the home team of Greene at 2-1.
The championship game was hence then set up and Norwich's Taylor Hansen of Norwich took full advantage of the matchup as she would earn all-star honors in the tournament, partly due to her hat trick which she recorded in the championship.
Hansen's first goal would come from an assist from Delilah Geislinger, followed by a second goal in the first half, when Gabby Mirabito assisted Hansen. The second half was all Hansen as she completed her hat trick with an unassisted goal.
Norwich would dominate the championship game on the offensive end recording 28 shots on goal and seven corners, compared to Oxford's 3 shots on goal and two corners. However, the goalkeeper, Alexis Kohlhepp, for Oxford would defend her goal valiantly as she recorded 17 saves for the Blackhawks.
Earlier that day, the consolation game was played between Edmeston and Greene, with Edmeston emerging as the third place team after taking down the home team at 2-0.
The following girls were named to the all-star team for the tournament: Greene - Kayla Page; Edmenston - Kaitlyn Gott, and Cassie Menendez; Oxford - Hannah Hodge, Amelia Wakefield, Alexis Kohlhepp; and Norwich - Saige Benedict, Gabby Mirabito, Hunter Cole, with the MVP of tournament being Norwich’s Taylor Hansen.
