Blackhawks use second half to claw to their first win

OXFORD – Oxford varsity football would take full advantage of their powerful run game as they methodically grinded their way for a win in front of their hometown crowd on Friday, Sept. 9.
Whitney Point came to visit the Blackhawks for their home opener that night, as the two teams exchanged blows in the early parts of the game.
“We started off slow out of the gates but we started picking it up. Our guys really stepped up in the absence of people who are injured. The guys really looked for ward to playing at home in front of the crowd,” said Oxford head coach Jeff Newton.
As coach Newton attested, Oxford would surrender the first points when Whitney went up on the board 6-0 early in the first quarter. However, following the early score it was Oxford from their on out.
Oxford's Jon Heggie would score first for the Blackhawks, tying the game up at 6-6, when he ran in for the score.
Oxford would climb to a 14-6 lead at the half, following a six yard run from quarterback Chris Martin, followed by a Heggie run for a two point conversion.
“We looked better, for having 15 juniors on the team, a lot of the kids are starting to really get it,” said coach Newton.
Following the break, Oxford continued their slow methodical climb for the win, as Hunter Davenport would add a touchdown to his stats when he grinded out a goal line touchdown from one yard out, followed by a Charlie White two point conversion run.
Mickerson Clune would see action in the fourth as he tacked on some insurance points for Oxford with a two yard touchdown run in the fourth.
The ground game and solid defense was the factor that helped lift the Blackhawks to their first win on the season. Rushing statistics: Jon Heggie: 8-86 yards with a touchdown and a fumble; Hunter Davenport 13-115 yards with a touchdown; Chris Martin 6-41 yards with a touchdown; Mickerson Clune 3-10 yards with a touchdown and a fumble; Buster Crandall 1-11 yards; Jake Smith 1 for -2 yards; Aaron Rifanburg 2-1 yards; and Charlie White 1-3 yards and 1-3 yards and a two-point conversion.
On the defensive end of the game Mickerson Clune recorded eight tackles with three going for losses, while Hunter Davenport had six tackles as five went for losses.
“We had no standouts, but this is a team game and a team effort all the way around,” said coach Newton. “It was a team effort, we do have some mistakes to cleanup but were going to address those this week.”
With the 26-6 dominating win over Whitney Point, Oxford will enjoy a 1-1 overall record before they host the Greene Trojans this coming Friday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m.
“It is going to be a war, they’re very physical and we're physical. It is going to come down to between the tackles. I think Greene is a tough opponent and we're going to do everything we can this week to prepare for them,” said coach Newton on the coming Greene game.
