Brother Sun slated for 6 On The Square fall opener
OXFORD –This Saturday, Sept. 17 beginning at 7:30 p.m., 6 On The Square in downtown Oxford is exceptionally proud to open its fall season with Brother Sun, a trio that beams with deep feeling and perhaps the most luminous men’s 3-part harmonies performing and recording today.
To understand the influence of Brother Sun, you’d have to get on a stage and look out. We don’t mean you have to be up there singing because you’d be, well, preoccupied, but stand at the corner so you can inconspicuously peak out at the faces of those listening. We’ve done that and we noticed something special.
Audiences slip into the songs with closed eyes and frequently open mouths as they sing along—whether they know all the words or not is irrelevant. The Brother Sun reach extends as far as their voices carry, and it holds listeners in a safe space that shimmers with meaning and soulful presence.
Musicians, singers, and songwriters Greg Greenway, Joe Jencks, and Pat Wictor write and deliver songs worth singing, no matter what the genre. In concert and on recordings you will hear some folk, Americana, blues, gospel, pop, jazz, and more in a single session, all delivered with centering, gorgeous vocals.
Fans of traditional and contemporary music don’t always line up for the same shows but that doesn’t matter when Brother Sun is in town – they unify the audiences, especially for those who also love slide guitar, piano, acoustic guitars, uke, and more.
The trio is bringing music from their latest recording, “Weights and Wings,” which is currently at #1 on the Folk DJ Charts, right where it debuted this spring. This is the record that includes the A-cappella version of “Mary, Don’t You Weep and Moan,” a fan favorite that’s been heard at major festivals all summer long, including the main stages of both the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and last week’s Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival.
Purchase tickets on-line at our website www.6onthesquare.org at the discounted pre-show price of $20 until the day of the show, or for $25 at the door. Ticket prices for students 18 and under are always $2; please call 6OTS at 607-843-OTS6 to make a student reservation. Our doors open one-hour prior to show time.
The Opening Reception for our latest Art Exhibit, The Artwork of Chuck Hafner, is this Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 5–7 p.m. This exhibit of graphite and pencil drawings will be on exhibit till November 18.
