Lady Marauders fall short in finals of Mt. Markham Optimist Tournament
WEST WINFIELD – The lady Marauders of Sherburne-Earlville saw increased action over the weekend as they participated and advanced to the finals of the Mt. Markham Optimist Tournament.
Following a loss to Cooperstown on Thursday, Sept. 8, losing 4-2, the girls prepared for their trip to West Winfield for the weekend tournament.
S-E would first face off against Cherry-Valley Springfield in the first round of the tournament on Sept. 9, a game in which the Marauders would walk away with a solid 4-3 win when the game was complete.
S-E would enjoy a 3-2 lead at the half before tacking on the fourth goal in the second half (also allowing one additional goal for CV-S).
Tessa Cole would earn two goals on Friday helping propel her team to the finals, while Lexi Elderkin, and Carley Britton each netted one a piece in the game.
The following day on Saturday, Sept. 10, S-E would take on the home team, Mt. Markham in the finals on the tournament.
Despite only dropping to a 1-0 halftime deficit, S-E would fail to muster enough to overcome the gap, losing to Mt. Markham 2-0 in the finals.
Notably, Alexis Elderkin, Shay Franklin, and Emily Stanton were all named to the all-tournament team following the loss. While Carley Britton was named offensive MVP.
The Lady Marauders (2-3) will now travel north to play Holland Patent on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 4:30 p.m.
