Lady Trojans split games before rematch with Vestal
GREENE – The varsity girls field hockey team in Greene now sits at 4-2 overall record in 2016, after winning their first matchup of the week against Tioga, before dropping a game to Whitney Point.
The lady Trojans would travel to Tioga on Sept. 12, in what proved to be a game of two teams in far different places skill-wise as Greene would dominate much of the game winning 5-0.
Greene would enjoy a comfortable 2-0 lead at the half following a goals from Alyssa Sands first and an assisted goal from Chrissy Boeltz (assist McKenna Sergi).
The lead following the half would then extend to 5-0 when Sands again got the momentum shifted for the Trojans, with her second goal of the game which was assisted by Katie Anderson. Chrissy Boeltz would hook up with Jenna Crosby for the assist to Crosby's goal. While Skylar Gilmore would finish the game off with her unassisted goal to raise Greene to a 5-0 victory on the road.
Despite just being held to five goals in the game, Greene would show dominance over Tioga, producing 27 shots on goal to Tioga's one, while Greene also recorded 10 penalty corners.
“They only held us to five goals so they were able to keep it pretty low, we just have been having a tough time putting the ball in the net,” said Greene head coach Christine McCabe.
The following day Greene played host to the visiting Whitney Point Eagles in a much more closer matchup when it was all said and done.
Despite recording one more corner – Greene at six, Whitney Point at five – and only seeing one less shot on goal in the game – Greene seven, Whitney Point eight – Whitney Point would emerge the victors of the Sept. 13, matchup, winning 2-1.
Greene would trail Whitney Point 2-0 at the half, but would see some of their younger athletes step up in the second half to produce a goal, drawing the game to 2-1.
“Second half we played so well, our offense was so much better,” said coach McCabe. “We definitely played a better half and it was nice to see the younger girls step up to play the way we should play.”
Despite the improved play in the second half, Greene would only be able to gather themselves together enough to score the one goal, ultimately falling to Whitney Point at 2-1.
Greene (4-2) will next travel to play powerhouse Vestal on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
This will be a rematch game of a earlier 2016 matchup in which the lady Trojans would outshoot Vestal 14 to 3, however, finding the net was once again the problem as they would lose to Vestal 2-1.
“Our league is tough, we just need to win some of these close games so were in a better spot for playoffs,” said coach McCabe. “We have opportunities we just need to capitalize.”
