Barn burner in UV leads to fifth set win for Storm volleyball on the back of Nogaret

UNADILLA – The Unadilla Valley varsity girls volleyball team has indeed seen their toughest opponent to date in 2016.
Toughest opponent or not, to the lady Storm did not back down as they eventually prevailed over Unatego earning the tantalizing win at 3-2.
Down 2-1 in sets and with their perfect season on the line, Unadilla Valley would bump, set and spike their way to an amazing win at 3-1, closing out the final two sets with victories.
Unadilla Valley would seem to be in the drivers seat early on, after fighting their way in the very first set to a 25-22 win. However, Unatego would reverse that score in the second set dropping UV a set in the match at 25-22 in favor of Unatego.
Unatego would then proceed to extend that 1-1 tie, to a 2-1 lead when they dropped the Storm another set in the third at a score of 25-18.
It is then that something special happened. Sara Nogaret would step to the line for her serving attempt. Instead of the normal few serves from a varsity athlete, Nogaret would remain on the line to start the fourth set with 20 consecutive serves, 10 of which went for aces.
“Sara Nogaret has 13 aces; she also started the fourth set serving for UV and had 20 serves in a row to lead us 20-0 to start the fourth, ten of those serves were aces,” said Unadilla Valley head coach Bridget McHugh.
On the back of a Nogaret serve, UV would start the fourth set just as coach McHugh attested 20-0, before Nogaret was relieved of serving. The fourth set would end with a Storm win at 25-10.
A revitalized UV team, tied with Unatego at 2-2, and entering the final set of the match, earned an impressive 4-0 start to their 2016 season when they went right down to the wire for the fifth set win, coming at 25-21.
Notably players in the win for Unadilla Valley, following Nogaret's performance, Erin Kelly would play strong recording seven aces and nine assists, followed by Megan Carpenter with 11 assists and seven kills, and Macie Franklin with two blocks. Standout Keana Schrag would again produce for the Storm with her 20 digs in the game and five aces.
In the loss for Unatego, Kourtney Brownell and Megan Short would each have 10 aces, followed by Mariah Sullivan with 10 kills and four blocks, Juliet Gagliardo with six kills and four blocks and Allie Hoyle with three digs.
Unadilla Valley (4-0) will get no downtime following the win, as they once again will play at home on Wednesday, Sept. 21, when they host Sidney at 6:30 p.m.
Following the loss, Unatego will travel to Walton on Friday, Sept. 23 for their next matchup.
