BINGHAMTON – Norwich took one more step in their pursuit of 2016 division championship when they defeated Chenango Valley on the road at 5-2, on Sept. 21.
Securing the win for Norwich over the Warriors was the duo of Riley Marsh and Ava Granquist at the second doubles spot. Marsh and Granquist would win the match against Claire Harvey and Linsey Reardon of CV in straight sets at 6-1 and 6-4.
“This was a great win for them. Riley has stepped in to play at the second doubles spot while Olivia has been out, and has done a great job playing the higher position,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart.
Reaching that point for Marsh and Granquist to seal win required their teammates to produce on the court. Norwich would secure wins at three of the four singles spots, while winning one of the other two doubles spots on the day.
Impressively for the Tornado, the singles positions would only surrender four games in their triumph.
Makenzie Maynard would lock down the first singles spot with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alexa Attleson. While second doubles Caroline Stewart and third doubles Samantha Gage would also win in straight sets of 6-0, 6-0; and 6-2, 6-1 respectively.
Norwich would suffer one of their two losses on the day when the Warriors saw Lindsay Thorn earn the win of Norwich's Cierra Sherman at a score of 6-4 and 6-3.
First doubles duo of Brooke Steigerwald and Megan Burke of Norwich would continue the trend with a win over Katie Mach and Katerina Retzlaff at 6-4 and 6-3.
While the third doubles team for Norwich, Natalie Bennati and Logan Fredenburg, would battle however, coming up short to CV's Haley Spencer and Elizabeth Selby at 6-1 and 6-4.
With the team win over CV, Norwich (7-1 overall, 4-0 league) has edged even closer to a possible repeat as division champions – four years running.
Norwich will be on the road on Friday, Sept. 23, when they travel to Windsor to take on the Black Knights.
