2016 McDaniel-Baxter Cross Country Invitational
CHENANGO VALLEY – The annual invitational in high school varsity cross-country – which is considered the pre-state meet was held this past Saturday, on Sept. 24.
Some impressive performances from some Norwich runners were recorded with Ben Ericksen and Nicole Jeffrey leading the packs once again for the Tornado.
The Norwich boys and girls runners would compete in races seven and eight of the massive invitational which would see hundreds upon hundreds of runners take to the 3.1 mile course throughout the 12 race day.
Norwich boys and girls would both finish in 14th place in their races as a collective off of their individual scores.
Corning senior Kevin Moshier and Fayetteville-Manlius senior Patrick Perry would finish first and second in the boys heat with times of 15:41.6 and 15:58.8 respectively.
Ericksen of Norwich would lead the Tornado runners – both boys and girls in his finishing rank and time – recording a time of 17:05.1 for a 35th place finish.
Ericksen was followed in the boys heat seven by: Marcus Cashman in 75th place with a time of 18:09.3, Noah Bufalini in 100th with a time of 18:56.9, Michael Cardoza in 140th with a time of 20:16.5, Orion Slater in 156th with a time of 20:49.2, Stanton Baker in 159th with a time of 20:59.7, Chris Barton in 160th with a time of 21:03.0, Jacob Russell in 164th with a time of 21:08.2, Kody Harrison in 183rd with a time of 21:46.2, John Matlack-Grey in 193rd with a time of 22:35.5, and Brandon Cardoza in 220th with a time of 33:40.3.
On the girls side in heat eight of the twelve heat invitational, Amanda Vestri a senior from Webster Thomas would earn the top spot with a time of 18:15.0, followed by Fayettville-Manlius freshman Claire Walters in second place with a time of 18:15.1.
Nicole Jeffrey would lead the Tornado runners in the heat with her 50th place run with a time of 21:41.4. Jeffrey would manage to finish nearly 100 spots ahead of the next Tornado runner impressively showing off her speed as she is just a sophomore.
Following Jeffrey for Norwich was Nicole Mikalunas in 131st place with her time of 32:25.3, Leslie Galeano in 134th place with a time of 32:48.8, Payten Seiler in 137th place with a time of 34:45.2, and Alison Mikalunas in 138th place with a time of 35:31.2.
Getting their feet wet in what will be the same course the runners in the New York State Championship meet will travel on, Norwich churned out impressive times before returning to practice.
Norwich then regrouped and took to the course in Edmeston on Sept. 27, for their next outing.
