Hull and the Marauder defense lead S-E to another victory
SHERBURNE – The Marauders defended their home field valiantly this past Friday, when they stopped out any Falcon presence from the grounds, with a 41-6 dominating win over LaFayette/Fabius-Pompey on Friday, Sept. 23.
S-E would jump on the board first when Lincoln Owen found pay-dirt for the first of two times on the night. Owen, who finished with 156 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, who pound this first score in just two yards out – Matt Hull would grab his first points of the night with a point after kick for S-E.
It was then the defense would be shocked. Up 7-0, and already beginning to establish their powerful ground game, S-E's defense was caught resting when LaFayette/Fabius-Pompey quarterback Gunner Schumacher launched a pass to Aiden McKinney, who hauled the pass in for a 63 yard strike – two-point conversion failed.
A stunned Marauders squad would need to regroup after squabbling their early lead to the big play potential of the Falcons, as the matchup looked to be an actual contest at this point. While S-E was unable to manage any meaningful gains to finish out the first quarter what happened in the remaining three quarters truly showed how the 2016 Marauders come together for a powerful win.
Only up 7-6 over the Falcons heading into the second quarter, the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders marched their way to five consecutive touchdowns for the remainder of the game, surrendering no other points while amassing an amazing 504 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
In the second quarter Joe Purdy grabbed his chance at a touchdown as he danced his way to the end zone from 10 yards out – two point failed. Purdy would finish the contest with a team third best 97 rushing yards.
Matt Hull, Sherburne-Earlville's leading rusher on the season, managed to gain an additional point following his early extra point when he found the end zone through the air when he caught a 12 yard pass from Gabe Irwin – two point failed. Hull would lead the Marauders in rushing and receiving on the day with 205 yards on the ground and 111 yards through the air. Irwin would finish the game going 8-18 through the air for 148 yards and two touchdowns.
Up 19-6 at the half, the defense would remain un-scored upon following the break, only surrendering the early touchdown through the air.
For the offense, they got right back to work following the break when Owen decided to take his second in for a score from two yards out – Hull would add a rushing two point conversion to follow.
To finish out the now lopsided 27-6 game in the fourth quarter S-E would send leading rusher Hull in once more as he sprung himself for a five yard dive into the end zone – two point failed.
Mike Giglio decided to join the scoring spree when he came in the game late to grab Irwin's second passing touchdown on the day, a 21 yard reception for the score – Cody Beckwith also was looking for some points when he tacked on the two point conversion run.
In the 41-6 beat-down over the Falcons, where S-E successfully shutout the visitors for three quarters, S-E now moves to 3-1 on the season as they prepare for their toughest competition yet.
Sherburne-Earlville (3-1) will now take to the road where the defense and rushing attack will be key, as they travel to play General Brown (4-0) on Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m.
