Goalkeeper Thad Karaman shines for S-E, despite two losses and a tie
CLINTON – The first place Warriors of Clinton high school's varsity boys soccer team handed the Marauders a loss on Sept. 28, when Sherburne-Earlville traveled to Clinton – losing 5-1.
S-E struggled to begin the game, as Clinton struck quickly for two scores in the first half early on.
This was followed by a Marauder score by Kyle Cole, drawing the game to a respectable 2-1 deficit with the first place Warriors. This short-lived momentum would come to an end with a S-E self inflicted goal, raising the deficit to 3-1 at the half.
“The Marauders hung tough as Kyle Cole cut the deficit with a goal fed by Owen Rodriguez making it 2 – 1,” explained S-E head coach Mike Rodriguez. 'Yet an S-E own goal before the half made it 3-1.”
Following the half, Clinton would tack on two more goals as the S-E offense stalled producing no more strikes in the contest.
Leading the Warriors in scoring was Joshua Houle with two goals, followed by Henry Garner with a goal and an assist, Nikesh Sharma with a goal, with Cody Jones of S-E tacking on a goal for Clinton. Clinton recorded 22 shots on goal, 10 corner kicks, with their keeper Dominic Pascucci having two saves.
On the Sherburne-Earlville side Kyle Cole would record the lone goal off a pass from Owen Rodriguez, as S-E only managed three shots on goal, and one corner kick. In the loss S-E's goalkeeper shined with 18 saves in the game.
SHERBURNE – The following day, Sept. 29, the S-E boys soccer team hosted Canastota where they suffered yet another defeat on the season, losing 3-1 after an early lead and a tied halftime score.
The Marauders claimed the lead in the game with a Garrison French goal assisted by Owen Rodriguez, to open up the matchup. Despite the quick start, the Marauders would fail to find the the back the net for the remainder of the game.
“The Marauders came out strong early as they pressured the Raiders and were rewarded with a Garrison French goal stemming from an Owen Rodriguez run through the defense and pass toward the top of the penalty box,” said coach Rodriguez. “Undaunted, the Raiders would tie the game five minutes later off a Dawson Lester goal from a failed Marauder defensive clear.”
With a 1-1 halftime score, S-E could not manage to put themselves in the position they needed to offensively for the resurgence. Lester of Canastota would assist Steven Scaramussino's for the goal, raising the Raider lead to 2-1, before Adam Burbank powered his way in for the unassisted goal in the second half, giving the Raiders a 3-1 victory of Sherburne-Earlville.
In the win for Canastota, they recorded eleven shots on goal, three corner kicks, while their goalkeeper John Sadowski grabbed six saves. Scoring for the Raiders was: Dawson Lester with a goal and an assist, Adam Burbank with a goal, and Steven Scaramuzino with a goal.
In the loss for S-E, their offense managed seven shots on goal with three corner kicks, with the lone score coming from French off a Rodriguez assist. Goalkeeper thad Karaman of S-E would nab eight saves in the loss.
VERNON – The boys of the S-E soccer team would enjoy a one day break before they were again on the road, heading to play Vernon-Verona-Sherrill high school to face off against the Red Devils on Saturday, Oct. 1.
This game, unlike the two prior, would have a much different outcome with a tie at 0-0, following the game.
Following an earlier season loss to VVS at 4-0 – opening game of the 2016 season – a much improved squad would not earn the win on the scoreboard, but a moral victory was gained for S-E.
“Although the offense was unable to score, the defense for S-E earned their second shutout of the season,” said coach Rodriguez.
The stars of the defensive struggle were both goalkeepers for S-E and VVS – Thad Karaman and Andrew Gowans respectively.
“Thad Karaman was stellar in goal recording 15 saves, several of which left the Red Devils shaking their heads. Andrew Gowans of VVS made outstanding saves as well when Owen Rodriguez's header off a corner kick was denied leading to a scramble in front of the net,” said coach Rodriguez. “Mitchell Doing (S-E) almost poked the ball across the goal line, but the Red Devil's goal keeper dove to make a key save as he cradled the ball in his hands on the goal line.”
S-E recorded five shots on goal and three corner kicks, while VVS had 15 shots on goal and 16 corner kicks in the contest.
The 0-0 tie over the weekend, leaves the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders with an overall 2-9-1 record heading into their next game. The next game for the S-E boys will be at home on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. as the Marauders will be celebrating their senior night when they host the Golden Knights of Holland Patent.
