Greene weekend field hockey tournament
GREENE – The annual Trojan varsity field hockey tournament took place this past weekend, with Whitney Point taking the top spot with a 2-0 win over Greene after rain caused the finals game to be called at the half.
The first day of the four team tournament, Friday, Sept. 30, featured Maine-Endwell face off against Whitney Point, while Greene played Marathon.
The lady Trojans dominated in their first outing of the weekend, defeating Marathon 3-1, while outshooting their opponents 20-6.
With a halftime lead of 3-0, Greene cruised their way to the win and the championships in the second half of play seeing 10 of their 20 total shots come in the second half – none scoring. Marathon saw improved play in the second half with five of their six total shots coming in the second half of play.
Scoring in the game for Greene was McKenna Sergi with one goal and two assists, followed by Alyssa Sands with a goal, and Brianna Austin – who snagged her first varsity goal of her career.
Moving on to Saturday, Oct.1, the two showdowns to finish out the tournament, featured the Greene lady Trojans and the Whitney Point Golden Eagles in the finals, with Maine-Endwell and Marathon playing in the consolation game.
Maine-Endwell took the consolation game for a third place finish in Greene's tournament, bumping Marathon to last place.
However, in the finals, with Greene facing a team they have previously lost to in 2016, this matchup saw the Golden Eagles pull away early from Greene in what was a rain-soaked game.
Down 2-0 at the half, the game would ultimately be called off due to inclement weather, handing Whitney Point the tournament championship.
“We were actually playing really well, Whitney Point scored on a corner, they just executed when they had opportunities,” said Greene head coach Christine McCabe. “They didn’t have many, but when they did they just capitalized.”
Whitney Point finished the half with two goals scored off of five shots and four corners, while Greene managed one shot and one corner in the half of play.
“We had a couple of opportunities, almost scored a goal but a girl had a defensive save,” said coach McCabe.
With Whitney Point taking the win Greene was forced to settle for a second place finish in their weekend tournament. Up next for Greene is Deposit on Tuesday, Oct. 4, when they will travel on the road for the matchup which is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m.
“They're (Deposit) pretty competitive, they've always been a scrappy team,” said coach McCabe. “They have a few standout girls and the rest just work so hard. They're always a challenge when we play them.”
