Auditions for new musical being held in Norwich
NORWICH - There is a new singing opportunity being planned for Norwich and the surrounding area. Singers from area church choirs, school choirs, and community members are invited to join together to perform “Ceremony of Candles”: A Cantata for Advent and Christmas by Joseph Martin.
The event will be hosted by the United Church of Christ, First Congregational of Norwich, under the leadership of Mary Mayo Williams (director) and Bob Oehme (accompanist). The rehearsals and performance will take place at the church, located at 11 West Main Street, in Norwich.
"Ceremony of Candles" is an extended work, about 50 minutes long, for singers and narrators which will require a commitment of significant preparation time. The musical selections combine carols of faith with the music of Joseph Martin and speak of the light of Christ coming into the world.
Rehearsals will be held on six Sunday afternoons in November and December. A performance will be given on Sunday afternoon December 18 at 4:00PM.
Mary Williams began planning for this program when she learned that the Sing Out and Celebrate event usually hosted by the Broad Street United Methodist Church would not be offered this year. "Community members look forward to the Sing Out event to mark the Advent season. Now, with the 'Ceremony of Candles' our community will still experience beautiful choral music and singers will have the opportunity to join together in fellowship and song" said Williams. Williams is the Director of Music Ministries at the United Church of Christ and the Vocal Music Teacher at Norwich High School.
Singers must register through the UCC church office. There will be no registration fee, although singers will need to purchase their own music booklet. You can contact the UCC church office at 334-3434 or visit their website, at www.uccnorwichny.org.
