Tornado girls wipes the court with the Sabers

NORWICH – The Norwich varsity volleyball team treated their hometown crowd to another spectacular win when they handily defeated Susquehanna Valley in three sets.
The Tornado volleyball players impressively held the Sabers under 16 points in each of the sets, winning by a score of 25-16, 25-11, and 25-16.
“Once again everyone played in the game. I started many of the younger girls again who are really doing a great job stepping up,” said Norwich head coach Shelly Alger. “Everyone played well. Serving was key for us again.”
In the shutout win on Oct. 13, Norwich enjoyed dominating performances from Meghan Komendarek who went for 10 in a row with her serves at one point. Kara Evans, Kalie Binelli and Alexis Taylor also managed to set up repeated serves to help lift Norwich to their seventh win.
Despite the dominating serves, Norwich was required to pull out some of the stops to hold off the Sabers and in doing so saw 11 girls record meaningful statistics. Meghan Komendarek had seven kills; Riley Strong had one ace, eight assists, and one dig; Kara Evans had one ace, and 10 kills; Kalie Binelli had seven aces, six kills, and two digs; Leahanne Humphrey had eight assists; Kalie Fleming had one assist; Virginina Mauriano had two kills; Ripley Strong had two aces and one assist; Alexis Taylor had one ace, one kill, and one dig; Jazmin Rodriguez had one ace, and one kill; and Layla Burton had two digs.
For Susquehanna Valley in the loss they saw Alyssa Lezotte and Alli Stank both record one ace; Stank also tacked on with seven kills and nine digs; followed by Michaela Henderson managed 17 assists; with Danielle Duke having two blocks.
Norwich (7-3) will next play on the road on Monday, Oct. 17, when they travel to Johnson City to play at 6:30 p.m.
Notably on the night, Norwich's junior varsity squad also defeated Susquehanna Valley, winning 2-1.
