Speedster Stirone runs for 271 and three touchdowns in loss for UV on senior night

NEW BERLIN – In a game that featured two star studded running games the Unadilla Valley Storm found themselves up late on the then 4-2 Walton Warriors as the winless Unadilla Valley allowed their first potential win to slip away off a long rushing strike on senior night.
Walton's Austin Brooker ripped off a 58 yard run to the house late in the fourth quarter for the go-ahead score, taking Walton to the 40-36 lead. Although Unadilla Valley managed an impressive 16-points in the fourth quarter as they tried to stave off the Warriors backs, Walton would amass a 22-points in the road win.
Before any action could get underway, Unadilla Valley honored their 11 graduating seniors: Michael Turner, Mason Mikalunas, Mike Smith, Jared White, Cameron Ferguson, and Matthew Turner, Scott Wood, Austin Ray, Caleb Simons, Nicholas Bonanno, and Robert Sponable.
Prior to the collapse at home late in the fourth, UV showed some fire in the three quarters previously played. After surrendering an early touchdown in the first quarter to Walton off a Josh Johnson four yard run, Unadilla Valley let loose their workhorse, Payton Stirone.
Stirone began his stellar performance on the night when he flew down the field for an 80 yard touchdown – two point conversion run good. Following Stirone's run, Caleb Simons of UV tacked on a score of his own from 28 yards out, taking the first quarter lead to 14-6.
However, despite the lead, UV would surrender it just one quarter later when Walton rushed for two touchdowns in the second quarter to that the 18-14 lead into the half.
The lone score in the third quarter would go to Stirone, who took his second in of the night in from 16 yards out for another lead change, as UV took back over 20-18.
With a mere 12-minutes standing between the Storm and their first win of the season. The fourth quarter saw the lead change four times in what truly was a crowd thriller – with Walton's Josh Johnson adding two scores and Stirone and Simons each grabbing another for UV.
The ground attack proved detrimental to both defenses on the day, as Walton amassed 65 carries for a total of 457 yards on the ground, while UV saw 32 carries for 333 rushing yards.
Turnovers proved to be another key to the loss for UV, as they coughed up five fumbles – losing two – while the nearly nonexistent passing attacks cost UV another turnover as quarterback Jared White had an interception in the contest.
Notably on the season, Unadilla Valley's Stirone has now amassed 1,079 rushing yards on the season, following his 271 yard three touchdown performance. Stirone's head coach Ray Dayton elaborated that Stirone may be approaching the school record – and has played in just two and half games in the 2016 season.
Unadilla Valley (0-7 overall) has completed their 2016 season with this latest loss, however, will continue play in two crossover games. The Storm will play on the road Friday, Oct. 21, when they travel to play Sauquoit Valley at 7 p.m. Walton (5-2 overall) will now play on the road against state ranked Harpursville-Afton in the quarterfinals of Class D, this coming Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1:30 p.m.
