Trojan swimming and diving prepares for sectionals following season ending win

GREENE – The Greene lady Trojans of the swimming and diving varsity team finished off their 2016 campaign with a miraculously close 53-41 win over Whitney Point.
Record-wise, Greene has seen its fair share of troubles on the season – as they in fact were just coming off a loss to the Warriors of Susquehanna Valley on Oct. 19, by a lopsided score of 102-73.
Coming off that loss, the lady Trojans hosted Whitney Point on Oct. 25, to which their youthful team pulled out the 54-41 win.
200-yard medley relay: Whitney Point's relay of Emily Woughter, Makayla Carter, Tori Slack, Abigail Somers won the opening event with a time of 2:22.79; followed by Greene's Kelly Darling, Amy Bentley, Ciara Gunderson, and Renee Clark at 2:38.9.
200 freestyle: MJ Peterson of Whitney Point swam a 2:37.15 for her teams second win; followed by Greene's Jenna Keathly at 2:54.58; and Baileigh Estabrook at 3:02.42.
200 individual medley: Whitney Point claimed their third straight win on the night when Abigail Somers swam a 3:03.16; followed by Greene's Amy Bentley at 3:10.37; and Whitney Point's Abigale Griswold at 3:47.53.
50 freestyle: This event would mark the lady Trojans first overall win on the night with Kailey Yanusas swimming a 27.50; followed by Tori Slack 27.57 of Whitney Point; and Ella Prindle of Greene at 32.35.
100 butterfly: Tori Slack of Whitney Point got some revenge with her win with a time of 1:06.61; followed by Ciara Gunderson of Greene at 1:34.45; and the Trojan's Ella Prindle at 1:45.39.
100 freestyle: Greene began to turn the tide with Nicole Flohr who won the event with a time of 1:01.34; followed by a second place finish from Kailey Yanusas 1:03.95; and Whitney Point's Makayla Carter at 1:05.78.
500 freestyle: MJ Peterson of Whitney Point returned for another win with her time of 6:56.97; followed by her teammate Abigail Somers at 7:08.97; and Greene's Jenna Keathly at 7:52.95.
200 free relay: The lady Trojan's relay of Nicole Flohr, Keirsten Frair, Katie Delgado, Kailey Yanusas claimed the big win on the day with a time of 1:55.69; followed by Whitney Point's team of Tori Slack, Makayla Carter, MJ Peterson, Abigail Somers at 2:07.79.
100 backstroke: Nicole Flohr enjoyed her third but not final victory on the day with a time of 1:15.31; defeating Whitney Point's Emily Woughter at 1:26.55; and fellow teammate Maggie Rossa at 1:27.50.
100 breaststroke: Makayla Carter claimed an individual win with a time of 1:30.21; besting Greene's Keirsten Frair at 1:37.63; and Amy Bentley at 1:38.73
400 freestyle relay: Greene bolstered together their team of Nicole Flohr, Keirsten Frair, Kelly Darling, and Kailey Yanusas who swam a remarkable 4:56.41; defeating their own fellow teammates for the top spot. The second team for Greene consisted of Jenna Keathly, Ciara Gunderson, Ella Prindle, and Baileigh Estabrook who swam a second place time of 5:27.03.
“We had a great season, although our win-loss record may not show it. Everyone improved throughout the season, especially my freshman, which make up half of our team. We did what we needed to do every night, and they were successful in making themselves better athletes,” said Greene head coach MK Dugue.
Following the win to close out the season, Greene (3-7 overall) will await their postseason to begin, with sectionals taking place this coming week. Currently the preliminary round of the Section IV meet Greene will be attending begins of Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Watkins Glen; with the finals of the tournament taking place next Saturday, Nov. 5.
