Second Annual College and Community Job Fair to be held
NORWICH - Job seekers and students are invited to explore a wide range of career and education options at the Second Annual College & Community Job Fair.
The event, presented jointly by Commerce Chenango and Morrisville State College, will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 10 at Morrisville's Norwich Campus, 20 Conkey Ave. in Norwich.
"Not everyone realizes the diversity of career and education options available within a small radius of Chenango County," said Jill O'Hara, Membership & Programs Coordinator for Commerce Chenango. "By combining the elements of both a job fair and a college fair, we're bringing all of those options together in one space."
Like any job fair, job seekers and soon-to-be college grads will be able to explore current openings at local employers. And college-bound students will be able to evaluate nearby colleges and universities. But what really sets the event apart, O'Hara said, is that it encourages both jobseekers and students to think long term.
"They will be able to really connect the dots between the career they want and the education they need to set them on their chosen path," she explained.
Jason Zbock, Executive Director of Morrisville State College - Norwich Campus, is working closely with O'Hara to plan the event.
"For me, the most exciting part is observing students engage with college, university and business staff, and ask insightful questions," Zbock said. The students will then be able to use the information they gather to make informed choices about their education and careers.
More than 20 area businesses and 8 colleges and universities are already signed on to participate in the event, which last year drew over 170 students and community members.
According to O'Hara, last year's event was better attended by students than job seekers in part because of what she says is a common misperception.
"I always hear people say there aren't jobs in Chenango County, but that's not true. Opportunities do exist and many of our employers have vacant positions they are eager to fill," she said. "Last year, 95 percent of the businesses and organizations who attended had current job openings. Some even conducted interviews on the spot."
According to O'Hara, it's just as important for students to know about these opportunities as it is for job seekers.
"We want students to be aware of the opportunities that exist locally as they plan for their future. It's such a win for our community when former students return to the area with the skills and knowledge our businesses need," she said.
The Second Annual College & Community Job Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 10 at Morrisville's Norwich Campus, 20 Conkey Ave. in Norwich. Event sponsors include NBT-Mang Insurance Agency, Start-Up Norwich, The Evening Sun and Pennysaver, and WCDO. For more information, visit www.chenangony.org/Jobfair.
