NMR employees sing praises of pets in the workplace

NORWICH – It's no secret that dogs are man's best friend, but what happens when you bring man's best friend into the workplace?
According to employees of New Media Retailer (NMR) in Norwich, the perks of having pets in the workplace are plentiful.
“Having Saint in the office with us creates a more comfortable environment for everybody,” said NMR Marketing Specialist Jacqueline Turner. “Spending time with Saint keeps us relaxed at work and makes us more productive throughout the day.”
Saint is a 10 month old cockapoo –a cocker-spaniel and poodle mix –and she is hypoallergenic and does not shed. She has been coming into the NMR office everyday along with her owner, NMR Director of Marketing & Corporate Relations Francesca Baio, since she was just eight weeks old.
Baio says that even as a puppy, it only took a week or two before Saint was accustomed to coming into work with her. Ever since, employees of NMR have looked forward to coming into the office each day to see the lovable little fluff ball.
“Other dogs that don't come into the workplace with their owners stay at home alone all day and thus spend a large portion of their lives bored,” Baio said. “Since she comes into work with me, she gets a lot of attention and is better behaved as a result.”
Science supports the idea that the human-dog relationship is mutualistic. A 2004 study at the University of Missouri-Columbia found that humans who petted a dog for 15-30 minutes experienced approximately a 10 percent drop in blood pressure, while the dog's blood pressure dropped as soon as a person began to pet them.
In addition to reducing stress, having a dog in the workplace also prompts employees to take short, but important, breaks throughout the day.
“Having Saint in the office reminds us to take occasional breaks in order to take her outside, which help keeps us fresh at work upon our return,” Baio said.
She added that these break times to walk Saint are not a distraction, but rather a team-building time where employees can increase camaraderie around the mutual interest of taking care of Saint. In other workplaces, Baio continued, all employees take breaks at some point that usually consist of scrolling down one's Facebook feed or playing on their cellphones, which do not include interactions between members of the workplace and do not serve a purpose.
All in all, the employees of NMR all agreed that Saint's presence makes coming into work a little bit easier. Maybe that's what we all need at work – a moment of paws.
