Flourishing County Farm Bureau receives 15th national award
CHENANGO COUNTY – At its 61st annual meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 25, the Chenango County Farm Bureau announced it were awarded its 15th American Farm Bureau Federation's (AFBF) County Activities of Excellence (CAE) Award – more than any other county in the country.
“It's quite an honor,” said Chenango County Farm Bureau President Bradd Vickers. “We were excited when we won our first national award, but to have won more than any other county–it's really something.”
The AFBF's CAE Award program recognizes county farm bureaus who thrive in five areas including: education and ag promotion, member services, public relations and information, leadership development, and policy implementation.
The Chenango County Farm Bureau passed or reaffirmed six local policies, 26 state policies, and 10 national policies at the 2016 meeting. The six local policies have thus become enacted at the county level, while the 26 state policies will be considered at the New York Farm Bureau's annual meeting on Dec. 6–8, 2016, and the 10 national policies will be heard at the annual AFBF convention from Jan. 6–11, 2017 in Phoenix, AZ.
Among other happenings at the October meeting, Executive Director of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County Ken Smith was recognized as the 2016 'Advocate of Agriculture.' The award is presented each year to an individual or individuals that have demonstrated the willingness and fortitude to promote and advance knowledge of the ag industry.
Also at the meeting, a free year of membership was presented to Craig Jochum, a Chenango County Farm Bureau member from Apalachin, NY. Last year's winner was Assemblyman Clifford Crouch.
In another testament to the highly regarded Chenango County Farm Bureau, Congressman Richard Hanna stopped by the CCFB Office last Thursday, Nov. 3 to meet with President Bradd Vickers.
Vickers commended Congressman Hanna for receiving the 'Friends of Farm Bureau' award; an award that recognizes Hanna's support in Farm Bureau legislation issues. Congressman Hanna also presented students from Sherburne-Earlville high school with a Capital Flag during his visit.
After what has been an eventful few weeks for the Chenango County Farm Bureau, their next order of business will be the NYFB meeting in December.
