Lady Bobcats fall in section finals

TIOGA – The varsity volleyball team of Bainbridge-Guilford impressed all they played against, while awing the crowds of many; however, their undefeated run in 2016 has come to an abrupt end following their loss over the weekend to Tioga.
B-G held an impressive 15-0 overall record, with an unblemished 10 MAC League record coming into sectionals, as they hoped to emerge victorious with a trip to states. This mission looked to be on track for the lady Bobcats after they emerged from the pool-play round robin round of play on Thursday, Oct. 3.
B-G entered into the semifinal round of the Section IV Class C tournament as the third seed – amid the other three teams, Trumansburg, Tioga, and Watkins Glen.
The Bobcats stormed out of the gates in the semifinal round, dropping previously undefeated Trumansburg 2-0, with set scores of 25-15 and 25-16.
Following their win over Trumansburg, B-G was matched with top-seeded Tioga, to which something the Bobcats had not experienced yet in 2016 happened. Tioga defeated the young Bobcat team, as B-G tasted their first loss on the season, losing 2-0 by scores of 25-17 and 25-18.
However, despite a loss, B-G responded well, securing a second place finish when they crushed Watkins Glen 25-14 and 25-21, to advance to the finals of the Section IV tournament.
Combined statistics for B-G in the semifinal round: Abigail Selfridge, four aces, 24 assists, 21 kills, and one dig; Zamira Caldwell, two aces, 12 kills, three blocks, and six digs; Erica Selfridge, six aces, 10 kills, 28 assists, and one dig; Alexis Carr, 12 kills; and Alyssa Hovey three aces, and six digs.
B-G then moved on to the Section IV Class C finals in Corning on Saturday, Nov. 5, to face off once again against the daunting Tioga squad.
This is when the season came to a skidding halt, as the Bobcats fought valiantly to keep their hopes of trip to states alive, however, fell victim to Tioga.
B-G dropped their first two sets 25-14, and 25-20 to Tioga. B-G finally pulled a set their way in the third in hopes of a comeback attempt – winning 25-20. However, a fourth set loss of 25-16 officially ended B-G's season, while Tioga will now advance to the state tournament.
“We would have liked to play better and give Tioga a better game but they are definitely a good team, well coached and experienced. We have nothing to be ashamed of,” said B-G head coach Tammi Selfridge.
B-G officially ends the 2016 fall season 16-1, as the MAC League Champions, as well as finishing second in the Section IV Class C tournament.
“Even more impressive, we finished among the top teams at all the tournaments we attended, winning at Norwich and Dryden,” said coach Selfridge. “We'll miss the seniors we are graduating, but many of the underclassmen are eager to play club in the off-season and are already excited to make another run at section champions again next year.”
B-G will be graduating: Rebecca Reyes, Alyssa Hovey, Kailey Harris, and Camille Hawkins.
Statistics for Bainbridge-Guilford in their sectional final matchuo with Tioga: Abigail Selfridge (10th grade) 12 assists, 12 kills, and one dig; Erica Selfridge (8th grade) two aces,13 assists, six kills, and one dig; Alyssa Hovey (12th grade) nine digs; Zamira Caldwell (10th grade) four kills, and one one dig.
